How to get rid of post workout soreness once and for allDear Friend,Dr Dave, I am in my mid 40's and was an athlete in High School and college. I want to get back into shape but every time I work out I am sore for days. What do you suggest? Darrin Matson North Hollywood, Ca. Here are a couple of quick and easy tips I wrote back to Darrin that you can do also. 1) Work on your flexibility. Stress the areas you are going to work out in your stretching, and stretch them every day. Do this when you first get up and again before your evening meal. These sessions do not have to be long. 5 or 10 minutes will do. Let's say you are running to get back in shape. Stretch your hamstrings, Achilles and the front of your lower legs (anterior tibialis). I like to prop my legs on top of something like a wall or a fence, but you can just as easily sit on the floor and reach towards your toes. The sitting position lets you also work on your lower back by focusing on keeping it straight while you stretch. 2) Stay hydrated during your work outs. Water works fine if you are going less than 45 minutes. Anything over than you should consider a sports drink.
