Why Does Everyone Here Look So Doggone Healthy?Dear Friend,My sister Cathy who runs my stats for me showed me something very interesting a few weeks ago. She said, " Do you know that next to the U.S.A. the biggest user of your products including Fish oil is Iceland?!" This came in the wake of looking at some of our "competition'' who uses the word "Iceland" in their product title. As we suspected no one in Iceland ever heard of them and were sure they were not an Icelandic company! Again this is a legal deception, but the stats on the Icelandic use of our products were much more interesting to me especially since if you''ve ever been their, you immediately notice how doggone healthy everyone looks.
So here is a little fist hand story about my travels there and some of my family form that area! I want to ask my aunt Inga who lives in Reykjavik Iceland for a little indulgence in this one. I promise Inga, I will not divulge any personal information. If you ever met my Aunt Inga you to would be impressed. You see she is now approaching her 80th year and looks at least 20 years younger. Even better she acts about 40 years younger! Inga has not exactly been a model health citizen. As a matter of fact she still smokes and drinks on occasion. She routinely stays up well past midnight, doesn’t exercise. As you might guess she is also one of the most fun, most lovable and interesting people you’d ever meet! Here is a little story for you that often gets brought up at family gatherings. Many years ago between medical school and residency I took a little time off to visit Europe and my family over there. My friends and I decided to make Iceland, where Inga lives our last stop. At the time Iceland air flew through Luxembourg. So I am sitting in the Luxembourg airport minding my own business when I hear a page come over the loud speaker in a very heavily accented English. A very Germanic voice said,” Herr Dr Woynarovski, you are to report to the customs department IMEDIATELY! Having just been in Amsterdam my mind began to race. Had I done anything illegal? I couldn’t really think of anything (at least I couldn’t figure out how anyone would ever know!) so I reluctantly got up and reported to customs. There a small wide very stern appearing woman scowled at me and said,” Are you Herr Dr Woynarovski?!” Not thinking of any way I could deny it, and standing there with no one else to blame, I decided to be brave about the whole thing, come what may. I squeaked out a barely audible “yes” in a voice that sounded more like Stewart Little the storybook mouse than a full grown man who was about to become responsible for thousands of lives! “Let me see your passport!” came the sharp retort. At this point I had visions of the movie Midnight Express. Certainly I was about to be unjustly locked in some Teutonic hellhole, never to be seen again. I could see the sad face of my mother slowly shaking her head when asked if there was any news about my fate. Then the jailor, oops, Customs Agent broke into a broad grin and said,” Herr Dr Woynarovski, message from your Aunt Inga! When you arrive in Iceland your are to bring to her 4 bottles of Gin, 4 bottles of Vodka, 2 bottles of whiskey, and 4 cartons of Rothman’s cigarettes! Have a nice day!” After a brief stop to change my underwear, I sighed with relief and boarded the plane, determined to carry out my assignment, even though we were all dead tired. I and 2 other friends boarded the bus from the airport city in Iceland, Keflavik, and arrived at my aunt’s apartment in Reykjavik the capitol city. When I rang the doorbell, a familiar voice answered, “yes?” “Inga, its Dave!” I said. “Yes?” “May I come in?” I replied. “Did you get the stuff?!” she asked. “Yes I did!” “Then you may come in!” Lest you think that all of those libations were for her let me explain. In Iceland there is a HUGE tax on alcohol and cigarettes. So it apparently was common practice to send your visitors to the duty free shop before they arrived at your house. Also it turned out to be Icelandic Independence Day and of course there was going to be a party. Everything I bought and more was gone by the next morning! However I don’t want to give you the wrong idea about my aunt or her people. They are extremely health conscious. There are literally gyms and swimming pools in every neighborhood. More over they are generally a very mentally healthy people in spite of the harsh climate and huge variations in daylight. Another fact I want you to remember is that Iceland is #2 in the longevity scale. Japan is currently #1 with more centenarians than any other country. Our own USA is ranked #23 in longevity even though we spend more by far on health care than any other nation in the world. With some where around 250,000 Icelanders living on the actual island of Iceland, you can bet that their #2 status does not come about because of their health care expenditures! Iceland is not a wealthy nation. As I said above they also enjoy good mental health as a people. In a study entitled “Lack of Seasonal Mood Change in Icelanders” (AM J. Psychiatry 158:328, Feb 2001.) authors Cott and Hibbeln noted that the incidence of mental illness, depression and S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder) were strikingly low in Iceland and much lower than countries that got a lot more sunlight in winter and throughout the year. Similar findings were noted in another country at the opposite corner of the world. Can you guess which one? RIGHT, Japan! They also noted the very low rate of suicide in these countries. Given all of the recent press about how the SSRI drugs like Prozac may increase suicidal behaviors this is an incredibly important finding. So I did a search of the scientific literature about fish oil and depression. I stopped at 100 articles. What I found astounded me! There were articles dating back as far as the 1980’s with positive results for fish oil in almost every type of mood disorder, from insomnia to depression, from schizophrenia to bipolar disorder, from post partum depression to Attention Deficit Disorder. Many of you have emailed me to note that you’ve had improvements in mood and mental clarity, even if you were not depressed to begin with. Most of you are sleeping better too. Dear Dr Dave, "I have been taking your fish oil for only about 1 week now, but I have to tell you something amazing has happened as a result. I have had severe insomnia since childhood. My parents even had me checked by doctors and none could help me. I normally get 3 hours of sleep a day total. Ever since I started your product I have literally doubled my sleep, and slept straight through. "Thank you so much, " Jo Cavanaugh San Antonio, TX While I am not going to bombard you with literature citations the way I have for the past couple of issues, I do want to bring out 2 very important findings. 1) The human brain by weight is more than 20% fatty acids. 2) The recurrent theme in many of these studies was the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fats. The higher the Omega 3’s the lower the depression scores. The higher the Omega 6’s the more likely you are to become depressed! Those of you who’ve actually read my emails know that this is a theme that is found over and over again for all kinds of medical problems, both physical and mental. BOTTOM LINE: KEEP TAKING YOUR FISH OIL! Some of you are now asking, “Well, those populations you talked about, the Icelanders and Japanese eat a lot of fish. Why spend all that money on Fish Oil if you can get all the benefits by just eating fish!?” The answer is that Fish Oil is such a good anti-oxidant that in spite of these populations health habits or lack thereof (both populations routinely smoke and drink heavily, both populations have much lower incidence of lung cancer and cirrhosis than we do) that they benefit even though they are consuming a lot of pollutants such as lead, mercury, and PBC’s. I promise you they would live even a lot longer if they were consuming the purest forms of Fish Oil. You also have to love salmon a whole hell of a lot to eat as much as they do. Incidentally the reason they eat so much fish is purely economic. Fish is relatively cheap compared to almost all other foods that have to be imported. My aunt Inga now takes several capsules a day of my Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil. It is slowly but surely catching on in Iceland for all the reasons I just mentioned. S if you want to be in a permanently better mood, have less heart disease, less stroke, less cancer, less arthritis, fewer memory problems and be around longer to enjoy it, remember Dr Dave’s Best Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil has NO COMPETITION!
