Jansen Pharmaceuticals has pulled a "Merck" and got a use patent on their drug Reminyl which is used for Alzheimer's. This drug gets its active ingredient, galantamine, from Chinese daffodil bulbs. What is a "use "patent? A use patent is when a naturally occurring supplement or pre existing chemical is marketed for one specific purpose only. In the case of Reminyl, it is Alzheimer's disease. There is only one pharmacy that makes the active ingredient in Reminyl. It is in China. If you call them up, you can buy a kilogram of Reminyl for $25,000. Technically you too could sell it for the going price of Reminyl, which in my area is about $130/ month. You would get about 8000 one month servings out of that kilogram and you would make at least 1 million dollars from it. You would not however be able to say it treats Alzheimer's disease. Only Jansen can say that since they own the "use patent" on Mother Nature! I suspect Jansen, the company that sells Reminyl gets the raw material for a lot less than $8000/kg because they buy in bulk. I would expect their ultimate profit margin to be in the several thousand % range! This would be in keeping with the profit margins we've seen for other drugs in the past.
