If you can Vomit Efficiently, You are IntelligentDear Friend,"If you can Vomit Efficiently, You are Intelligent" OSHO The above is a direct quote from one of my favorite philosophers, OSHO. Bizarre as it seems, there is method to my madness! It may be simpler if you think of it as,"How to Use both Sides of Your Brain!" What OSHO is referring to is the organization of the human brain. We have evolved with 2 different brains in a sense. The left side is the logical, organized, mathematical analytical side. The right side is artistic creative and chaotic. If you think about it you probably know some people who are stereotypical left or right brained. The left brainers usually do very well in school. They are universally considered smart by almost everyone and they have exceedingly well developed ability to memorize things. Hence, school all the way through college and beyond seems pretty easy to them. They can actually get something out of sitting in a classroom!
As a matter of fact all they have to do is show up hear it once and BANG! they don't need to study anymore. OSHO is also referring to the way our society rewards these skills, and believe me it's left brained all the way! I can remember our class president in Med School, Chet. Chet was one of these left brained people. He sat in class during the day and went out dancing and partying at night. He graduated at or near the top of our class. He could certainly "vomit efficiently"! His friend Robin was not gifted that way. She did everything Chet did and failed a year of school! She was finally told by her counselor, " You have to accept that you are not like Chet!" Chet was the prototypical Left brained guy who cruised through without breaking a sweat. He also was a super nice human being so no one could really begrudge him the ease with which he did what we all struggled mightily to do. At least we didn't begrudge it to him in public! Chet is now practicing psychiatry in Seattle. A woman I know I'll call her Marge is the typical ultra right brained person. (No this is not a political description). She did average to below average in school and was told she wasn't College material and so never went. If you ask her what "A Stitch in time Saves Nine" means she'll have trouble telling you. She doesn't usually say much and when she hears some one who is "learned" speak she often asks, "What did he/she mean?" Mechanical things routinely befuddle her. By all accounts she is not the brightest light in the building. That is until you see her artwork. She never had any real formal training of any kind but she can paint anything. Her water colors are beautiful. They look like they belong in a gallery instead of her house. People who see them usually assume a famous artist painted them and ask, "Who painted this beautiful work?!" Marge doesn't even like to paint! She really likes to work in glass, and I predict that her glass art will become famous in the next few years. As a matter of fact she is reluctantly becoming a local celebrity because of it. Frankly Marge is brilliant! She is just brilliant in a way that does not get immediate societal recognition. She uses her right brain almost exclusively. She sees color combinations and has visual ideas and creativity that astounds those of us who know her. Yet you might conclude from meeting her that Marge is at best of average intelligence. But I know Marge's real secret. She has plenty of intelligence; she just never developed her Left brain power very much because she didn't care about those things. Marge has just as much brain power as Chet, just not in a way that is routinely measured. Interestingly enough since she has been on Einstein, her success has grown and she is showing some signs of life in her left brain! Which brings me to the true meaning of brain power. Osho says that, "If you can vomit (regurgitate facts) then you are considered smart." In terms of brain hemispheres, if you are strong in the left brained skills, then you are accepted as bright and will go far in our society. I like to think of it this way. The strong left brainers shape the way our society works, the strong right brainers make it worth living in! Truthfully if you want to uncork your own true genius then my professional advice is to use both sides of your brain. I try to do this myself. I have pretty strong left brain skills from all the years of schooling. After all that is what is rewarded and what little child doesn't want to be rewarded and gain adult approval? Fortunately the school system did not kill off my right side. I write everyday, and creative writing, not just technical. I enjoy and play music as much as my schedule allows. I have numerous creative ideas in supplements and health related fields. I stink at art and spelling however! So I will have to work on that! My point is that we all have genius within us.
