Here is an email sent recently to me.

Dr Dave, after reading yesterday's Hot Stuff Email, I wanted to ask you about another plant. I have read about a plant called Tongkat Ali in a book by the so called plant hunter Jack Kilham. He says it is great for your sex drive. What do you think of this plant and are you going to include it in your sex formula when it comes out? Fred L. Lansing Michigan.

I have indeed heard of this plant and have evaluated it recently.

There are some serious problems with it that have made me think it's not the best choice for my formulations.

First, there are no real human studies with it.

This by itself is not uncommon with herbals. There are many plants that have been used for centuries safely and have not yet been evaluated by standardized scientific methods.

As a doctor that leaves me with little to stand on however. I prefer to see human studies before I add things into my preparations.

Tongkat Ali probably is safe since it is a food additive in many things in Southeast Asia. Here may be data in their universities but there is none in our national data base.

This leads me to be suspicious.

Still I can't rule it out in future preparations.

The next problem and this is much bigger is the issue of quality.

With this particular herb, there have been more contamination problems documented in terms of lead. Last time I checked, there were serious problems with polluted sources and even some of the clean ones were variable.

I will not put anything into my preparations that cannot be guaranteed as the highest quality and safe.
