Three Strikes and You're Out

Dear Friend,

As those of you know who have read my emails I often get what we call around here "Love Letters".

They are usually emotionally charged and often irrational. Sometimes the authors masquerade as authority figures, educated people and people who "see through" all the B. S. out there.

Many times they are Doctors who are aghast that someone might actually use their beloved scientific references to prove a point that they can't stand to hear: Mother Nature is in many cases Smarter than Man!

While the following is not the Best, "Love Letter" that we have ever gotten, or even the best one we've gotten this week (that honor goes to a poor soul who must be certifiable and schizophrenic), it does make some interesting reading. It also gives me a chance to clarify some issues that at least in this case must have caused some confusion.

I haven't ordered any of your products for a couple of reasons.

1. While I do believe that fish oil supplements are beneficial and I do take them myself, I don't see how you can justify the price of your "pharmaceutical-grade" Fish Oil.

2. Your email says: "Dr Dave's Best Fish Oil contains no detectable amounts of heart harming mercury, lead, PVC's or PBC's. It is tested for radiation, purified and concentrated and remains the industry benchmark" What are "PVC's", polyvinyl chloride? Since when has this been found in fish? Blood bags are made of PVC and have been shown (finally) to be safe. PBC's. don't you mean "PCB's", as in polychlorinated biphenyls? PCBs are certainly not good, having been shown to cause cancer in animals and neurological, reproductive and immune system damage. Also, its highly unlikely that any radiological activity would be found in deep sea fish; no need to stir up fears of radiation! All of the contaminants are damaging to human health but none of them have been shown to cause heart damage.

Your are hurting your credibility as a doctor (are you really?) with inaccurate science. If you don't want educated people to shrug you off as a quack, you should pay attention to the details of your claims. Glenn N. via internet

Let me address each issue separately.

Steeerike 1!!!

For #1 let me simply refer you to yesterdays' email. Fish Oil helps or prevents more things than any single prescription drugs with no overt side effects. A short list includes Heart Disease, Cancer, Arthritis, Alzheimer's Disease, Strokes, and many others.

The FDA and The AHA and the American Caner Society now all agree to these facts.

PVC's are PolyVinylChlorides which are a common form of plastic. It is used in almost all of the white containers and many of the clear containers that we use every day.

The softer the compound the more likely there is to be a transfer to food stuffs such as Fish, Liquids, Fruits etc.

Unbeknownst to our highly educated friend above there is a lot of this on fishing boats that handle and harvest Fish for consumption and of course fish Oil supplements.

The same things happen at factories where workers often wear gloves made of this material. Ditto for storage facilities and work surfaces.

Our manufacturing process removes these pollutants.

We use very hard plastic bottles for our Fish Oil for this very reason. It minimizes the transfer of these substances to the gel caps.

With the other products we use softer compounds, but individually wrap the contents in minibaggies that are not made of PVC's and are electrostatically treated to repel the charges of these molecules.

Unfortunately there is also significant PVC pollution in our waterways because of the manufacturing and waste products associated with plastic.

Technically PBC means "Poly biphenyl compounds" which includes chlorides bromides fluorides and halides. PCB refers to just one of these, polychlorinated biphenyl's. Apparently our critic did not know that there were other types of poly biphenyl's out there.

PBC's are also a common contaminant in Fish Oil and a by product of the petroleum industry but it is not at all the same as PVC's. Sorry but I do know the difference!

Steeerike 4! (we're being generous)

The characteristics of the population of the deep waters of the Norwegian Sea (due to radiation exposure) Izv Akad Nauk Ser Biol. 1995 Sep-Oct;(5):612-23.

The Norway sea hollow is filled by the local Arctic water and this facilitates penetration of many species during seasonal and other migrations down to the demersal layers, i.e., to depths, which are not specific for these organisms in basins with usual water stratification. Mass accumulations of Th. abyssorum have been found in the demersal layer, which is a main component of feeding of commercial plankton-eating fish as well as migrations of this crustacean across the water. Cesium accumulation has been found in all these layers.

This article details the accumulation of radiation (Cesium) in a specific area of the sea around Norway and Iceland where there is Most definite accumulations of radiation. Sources include naturally occurring radiation and some from manmade sources like Nuclear subs and power plants!

Of note, the pollutant count and the radiation count of Pacific Salmon is quite a bit higher than Atlantic Salmon most likely due to all of the underwater volcanic activity in the "Pacific Rim of Fire".

Collective doses to man from dumping of radioactive waste in the Arctic Seas. This points out how all organisms from tiny plankton to the small feeder fish like herring that make up the food for the deep sea fish Like Salmon that go into my oil are ALL exposed to radiation.

It also blows a hole in the argument used by some companies that they use only small natural Nordic fish from above the Artic Circle to make their products which are therefore naturally free of pollutants. Sorry folks the Oils HAVE TO BE PURIFIED for multiple pollutants or they are not the best grade. Period!

Steeerike # 5 (we're being very generous!) Pollutants don't cause heart disease.

Mercury has certainly been shown to directly harm the heart and is the reason why many studies that use just fish (or food grade Fish Oil) do not show heart benefit and formulations that lack pollutants (Pharmaceutical Grade do).

Landmark K, Aursnes I. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: Several studies have shown an inverse correlation between omega-3 fatty acids from fish in serum/adipose tissue and coronary heart disease. However, a high content of mercury in hair/toe nail had a negative effect, and in one study the odds ratio for myocardial infarction in those with the highest content of mercury was 2.16. A positive correlation between mercury in hair and the progression of carotid atherosclerosis has been found. Intake of fish is a major source of exposure to mercury, and a high content of mercury probably inhibits the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the development of coronary artery disease.

Heavy metals test heart's mettle. Mercury and lead may contribute to heart disease and hypertension.

This letter points out how both lead and mercury worsen heart disease and high blood pressure.

Steeerike 6! ( is this overkill?!) As to me being a real doctor, even the smallest amount of research would have shown this to be as irrefutable a fact as the claims I have made about the health benefits of Fish Oil and my product's purity.

As for Glenn I didn't bother to email him this information. I simply booted him form my email list. With his high level of expertise and intimate knowledge of the subject he certainly cannot learn anything from me.

I am certain that I will continue to get more "Love Letters". It is simply a marker of success!
