Under the knife part 1Dear Friend,While supplements can be far safer than many prescription drugs they are not without their own dangers. One area where this is not enough information for the consumer is what to do around surgery. While I am going to focus on many of the things that I make, I will also be talking about several things that are not in my supplements but in other popular or typical concoctions as well. Please understand that I am going to err on the side of conservativism here in terms of the time you'll want to stay off something if you are having surgery. Let me also define surgery for you. I am not talking about a dental cleaning or a tooth extraction with 1 or 2 stitches. In most cases, a couple of days to a week max is plenty of time to stop and you can restart 3 days after if there is no bleeding. But for major surgery with lots of sutures or major vessels or organs involved like gallbladder, gyn, breast, abdomen, etc. I'll give the anesthesiologists a break and tell you to stop for 3 weeks in advance and don't start for at least a week after or until your surgeon has given you the OK. As with most cases talk to your own personal surgeon about his/her preferences for supplements.
Ok here is the list 1) Omega 3 fatty acids: This includes fish oil flax oil and the so called balanced blends of 3-6-9 which you already know I think is ridiculous. These tend to thin the blood, which can make hemostasis (control of bleeding) harder for your surgeon. Hint: don't make your surgeon's job any harder. While fish oil has been shown to be helpful in lowering blood pressure, heart disease, improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels and seems to help prevent cancer via the above and other mechanisms, apply the 3 weeks before and 1 week after rule. 2) Vitamin E: This is primarily in our Monster Multi with minerals but various all natural forms of it may be present as a preservative in some other vitamins in very small amounts. In addition to being a disappointment in most well designed studies, Vitamin E can prolong your bleeding time. 3) Berry extracts including the Boosts (cardio and immune Booster): The flavonoids and anthocyanidins are known to strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation as well as improve eye disorders but they can affect blood platelets, which are needed to seal wounds. 4) Dong Quai (Angelica) is a popular women's herb which is supposed to help with menopausal symptoms and regulate female hormones. It contains plant-derived coumarins. The chemical and "sounds like" Coumadin qualities of this herb have made it a target for most traditional medical writers. Coumarins in fact are not Coumadins and have very little if any effect on blood thinning, but you can't tell doctors who read traditional medical journals that so prepare to stop these as well While I am on the subject of Coumarins (again this is not Coumadin), Horse Chestnut Extract, a popular herbal for swollen legs and varicose veins, has Coumarins as well so expect your surgeon or anesthesiologist to get nervous if you are on this one. By the way, while I’m at it, studies were done comparing the anti-swelling and vein healing properties of anthocyanidins as found in the boost products versus the Horse Chestnut Extract and the berry derived products won hands down. 5) Echinacea: In addition to the fact that few studies support its usefulness, Echinacea may affect the liver which makes it a bad choice for someone going under general anesthesia. 6) Melatonin: Melatonin is the body's natural sleep regulating hormone and found in small amounts in Sleep Wizard. Since some anesthesia uses sedatives and barbiturates, it’s best not to use Sleep Wizard for at least 3 days before and after surgery. Again, run it by your surgeon, or better yet your anesthesiologist for their preferences. There is a bunch more you should know about so I'll cover them over the next few days.
