Jane Weaver, Green Bay WI. Every now and then I forget that my list of readers is growing so rapidly that many of you may not have read the past emails. The number of questions that came from the email on Regenerizer and heart failure told me I have to restate and add some new info. First I still use statin drugs in my practice from time to time for several reasons. First I realize my vitamins are expensive and not everyone can afford them. People are paying money to their insurance companies for drug plans that do cover statins and of course if they are willing to run the risk of side effects which the Drug Companies would have you believe are "incidental" then we do use them. There is a medical legal precedent that has been set. If you have a patient with heart disease and they are not on a statin, then you better have a damn good reason why and have it documented to the letter. That is the power of Big Pharmacy!!!! Speaking of the power of Big Pharmacy, I wrote an email several months ago detailing how Merck the biggest druggie of them all held the patent on the combination of Co Q 10 and statins. Very nice patent the antidote to your poison and make money from both ends!
A few more points. High cholesterol by itself does not cause heart disease. You must know which cholesterol is elevated, good or bad and then know if the density of your bad cholesterol is high risk or low risk. Additionally between 30 and 50 % of people who have "normal cholesterol" have heart attacks. What do the drug companies do? Lower the level you're supposed to have and make extra drugs to get you there since no one drug now made can do it... How convenient!! Fish oil may or may not lower your cholesterol. But in at least one study it was shown to be 4X more effective at preventing heart attacks. What does this mean? It means that lowering your cholesterol may not protect you and that cholesterol may have very little to do with heart disease. To the extent that cholesterol can be a predictor of the inflammatory state in the body, I think it is a useful marker for one of the main risk factors for heart disease. "Coronary angiitis" or inflammation of the coronary (heart) arteries. One very recent study showed that 2 statin drugs Lipitor and Pravachol did next to nothing and nothing respectively to reduce the amount of plaque in the heart arteries. Most people know about statin drugs' effects on the liver and the muscles. Essentially they can poison both. While statin drugs block the body's ability to make new cholesterol, they also do have some anti- oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. I believe that these properties account for what benefits statin drugs have actually been shown to have at preventing heart disease. Unfortunately statins also block the body's ability to make a very important vitamin and one of the major ingredients of Regenerizer, Coenzyme Q 10. In yesterdays email I explained how Regenerizer helped some of my patient improve their failing hearts. I also mentioned I originally designed it to combat some of the toxic effects of fatigue and muscle poisoning that I had seen with the statin drugs. Slowly the traditional medical community is having to face another toxicity of statin drugs. One which will make so much sense if you read yesterday's email again. It is now becoming know that statin drugs can cause a 'statin cardiomyopathy" or poisoning of the heart. It should not be too much of a stretch to see that if regular muscle can be poisoned by statins and CoQ and Regenerizer can combat this, the heart which is one big muscle too can fall victim to the same toxicity and be saved by the same therapy... In my experience it takes about 6 to 12 months to see this full blown effect of statins on the heart. The fatigue they can cause can occur much sooner however. I think statins kill a lot of people in a way that is not even recognized by most doctors (I can hear them scoffing now!). This is why every patient I have on a statin goes on Regenerizer if it is humanly possible. Once again there are studies that claim statins do not interfere with Co Q production. Co Q 10 is a critical nutrient for energy generation as are Carnitene and Malic acid. Think we are done? Almost. A recent study published in The Archives of Neurology Vol 61 June 2004 stated, " Even brief exposure to atorvastatin (lipitor) causes a marked decrease in blood Co Q 10 concentration." This study went on to explore the risk of statin induced myopathy and stroke that may be caused by statins. So soon there may be data that implicates statins as a cause of stroke too. Now you know the first reason I created Regenerizer. As I said I still use statins because I have to if I don't want to get sued. But I am finding more and more patients who don't want them and can't take them. I am also using a ton of Regenerizer!! I can rest comfortably at night knowing my patients are protected and when the truth comes out as it inevitably will; I've done the right thing way ahead of everyone else.
