Doctor, I Think I've had a Stroke!

Fish Oil's Effects On Stroke Victims

Dear Friend,

Dear Dr Dave, I read the recent newsletters on stroke with great interest because my mom had a stroke just a few days ago. She was fine, and then she got a bit confused and couldn't talk right. Then she couldn't move her arm. She is in the hospital now. Should I try to sneak some fish oil into her? Will it help? Sally Bivens Miami, Fla.

This one is a tough one because the stroke and the neurological defect (speech and arm problems) have already happened.

There is not a lot of human data with Fish Oil and what happens during a stroke for obvious reasons.

1) Now one in this country is going to cause a stroke to see what happens!

2) How do you know how severe the stroke would have been unless you have a control group? This means people who you give a stroke in an exactly identical fashion and then DON"T give them the Fish Oil treatment.

There is however a lot of animal data where it is possible to recreate the exact injury in each animal and compare.

One study found that if the animals (cats) were taking Fish Oil in there diet the size of the stroke and the neurological defect (the amount of loss of function) that it caused was markedly less.

Another study found that the actual measures of damage due to lack of blood flow (free radicals) were markedly decreased if Fish Oil was part of the diet.

Yet another study showed an increase in our old friend Nitric oxide and a drop in blood pressure, both of which seemed to minimize damage.

The last study below found an improvement in memory and a slowing of the decline in spatial and mental acuity.

Recall that fish Oil also seems to limit the size of heart attacks when they occur.

Taken as a whole I would certainly expect that even giving Fish Oil right around the time of the Stroke would have benefits, but again this is difficult to prove.

As far as sneaking supplements into the Stroke or Coronary Care units, that was a figure of speech. While caring for my patients I alone bear the responsibility of what happens to them.

My training and expertise are the justification for using whatever means I need to help my patients.

And ultimately a wrong move or a bad outcome could end my career.

I would not advise using supplements or giving them to hospitalized patients without the direct supervision and knowledge of their personal doctor.

Of course I think in most cases the answer would be, "Don't you dare!" I think the most likely reason would be the idea that we recently disproved in the references of other emails, Fish Oil may lead to bleeding into the brain with stroke.

We know that this is not at all what was found, but since it is entrenched into the minds of Doctors and lawyers it would be a hard sell in court.

Translation: No one is going to risk it.

I can only speak for myself here. If it was me, I would try to continue all of my supplements in the hospital if I had a stroke or a heart attack.

Of course the trick is not to get there in the first place.

We all know the large population based studies that have shown reduced risk of stroke (stroke prevention) when Fish Oil is used. All the Best, Doc
