Fish Oil, Insomnia and Sex Drive...The Big Sleep and The Big O!!!

Dear Friend,

Doc, I have been taking your Fish Oil and Regenerizer for the past couple of months with some interesting results to say the least!

Recently, I bumped up my Fish Oil from 4 capsules to 8; 2 with each meal, and then 2 before I go to bed at night.

Since upping the dosage, especially the 2 before bed, I found that I am sleeping like the proverbial log after wrestling on and off with moderate insomnia for the past couple of years(I used to sleep like a baby till I hit my forties, and then I began to have trouble getting back to sleep after awakening to "use the facilities" in the middle of the night).

An interesting side effect is that I have gone from 2-3 cups of coffee a day to about half a cup(which I now drink with a fair amount of disinterest!).

I am wondering whether I am sleeping better because I stopped drinking the coffee or whether I stopped needing the coffee because I feel so rested from sleeping better!

In any case, what is the connection between Fish Oil and sleep/insomnia? It is really working for me.

RJ, San Jose California

P.S. As I belief I wrote to tell you once before, my current girlfriend is 15 years younger than me and VERY uh..."demanding" shall we say. The Fish Oil is helping STRONGLY in that department as well. Any comments?

Ross's comments are actually fairly common.

The reason why fish oil seems to improve sleep patterns in most [people is because of its effect on a very primitive area of the brain called the Pineal gland.

I say primitive because this gland is found in species far less developed than humans.

The pineal gland in people regulates the sleep and awake cycles.

Further explanation requires me to speak a bit about evolutionary theory so let me say it is just that and I am not making any religious judgments or comments here.

If you look to the most ancient reptile species known on earth, the Komodo Dragon, you will find a very well developed Pineal gland that makes a chemical that looks very similar to human melatonin.

If you go further down on the evolutionary scale to plants, you will see that they too make a melatonin like substance.

In each case the hormone made regulates sleep and awake cycles.

In plants it actually regulates when flowers are made and when they open. Ultimately this governs the entire life cycle of the plant!

AS humans age, melatonin levels universally go down.

This accounts for the phenomenon seen in old people: they sleep less and less as they get older.

Without melatonin, they lose much of their ability to sleep through the night.

Another fascinating thing happens as a result of the lack of melatonin.

People spend less time in slow wave sleep and this they make less Growth Hormone.

More than any other hormone Human Growth Hormone has been associated with the preservation of youth!

So as we age less melatonin leads to poorer sleep leads to less HGH leads to less muscle more fat and less brain function!

Sounds like aging to me!

For the real scoop on Growth Hormone including natural ways to stimulate it go here.

Fish Oil by virtue of its effects on the pineal gland helps augment melatonin secretion in a normal manner which leads to better sleep and more HGH secretion.

Better HGH secretion leads to other improvements in endocrine (hormonal ) function like improved levels of sex hormones, and less degradation to harmful sex hormone products (testosterone to Dihydroxytestosterone).

In addition fish Oil augments brain chemistry in multiple ways.

Such as improved serotonin levels which clams people down and relives depression, keeping them clearer headed.

It decreases the activity of the sympathetic nervous system during times of stress reducing cortisol and the anxiety state.

In women it also improves estrogen biology.

While I have gone into this in much greater detail in numerous emails in the past it bears repeating.

Ross J's experiences are especially helpful to me for pointing out how all of this ties together.

Its great to talk about science but we all want RESULTS!!!

A dose-ranging study of the effects of ethyl-eicosapentaenoate in patients with ongoing depression despite apparently adequate treatment with standard drugs.

All of the individual items on all 3 rating scales improved with the 1-g/d dosage of ethyl-eicosapentaenoate vs placebo, with strong beneficial effects on items rating depression, anxiety, sleep, lassitude, libido, and suicidality. CONCLUSION: Treatment with ethyl-eicosapentaenoate at a dosage of 1 g/d was effective in treating depression in patients who remained depressed despite adequate standard therapy. 1: J Lipid Res. 1998 Jul;39(7):1397-403. n-3 fatty acid deficiency decreases phosphatidylserine accumulation selectively in neuronal tissues.

Hamilton L, Greiner R, Salem N Jr, Kim HY.

Section of Mass Spectrometry, Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health, Rockville, Maryland 20852, USA.

We have previously shown that the docosahexaenoate (22:6n-3) status in membrane phospholipids influences the biosynthesis and accumulation of phosphatidylserine (PS) in brain microsomes and C6 glioma cells. In the present study, we investigated whether the observed effect of membrane docosahexaenoic acid status on PS accumulation is universal or occurs specifically in neuronal tissues. We observed that rat brain cortex, brain mitochondria, and olfactory bulb, where 22:6n-3 is highly concentrated, contain significantly higher levels of PS in comparison to liver and adrenal, where 22:6n-3 is a rather minor component. Phospholipid molecular species analysis revealed that in brain cortex, mitochondria, and olfactory bulb 18:0,22:6n-3 was the most abundant species representing 45-65% of total PS. In nonneuronal tissues such as liver and adrenal, 18:0,20:4n-6 was the major PS species. Dietary depletion of n-3 fatty acids during prenatal and postnatal developmental periods decreased the brain 22:6n-3 content by more than 80%, with a concomitant increase in 22:5n-6 in all tissues. Under these conditions, an approximately 30-35% reduction in total PS in rat brain cortex, brain mitochondria, and olfactory bulb was observed, while PS levels in liver and adrenal were unchanged. The observed reduction of PS content in neuronal membranes appears to be due to a dramatic reduction of 18:0,22:6n-3-PS without complete replacement by 18:0,22:5n-6-PS. These results establish that variations in membrane 22:6n-3 fatty acid composition have a profound influence on PS accumulation in neuronal tissues where 22:6n-3 is abundant. These data have implications in neuronal signaling events where PS is believed to play an important role.

Serotoninergic neurotransmission is affected by n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the rat.

Kodas E, Galineau L, Bodard S, Vancassel S, Guilloteau D, Besnard JC, Chalon S.

INSERM U316, Laboratoire de Biophysique Medicale et Pharmaceutique, Universite Francois Rabelais, Tours, France.

We explored the effects of chronic alpha-linolenic acid dietary deficiency on serotoninergic neurotransmission. In vivo synaptic serotonin (5-HT) levels were studied in basal and pharmacologically stimulated conditions using intracerebral microdialysis in the hippocampus of awake 2-month-old rats. We also studied the effects of reversion of the deficient diet on fatty acid composition and serotoninergic neurotransmission. A balanced (control) diet was supplied to deficient rats at different stages of development, i.e. from birth, 7, 14 or 21 days of age. We demonstrated that chronic n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid dietary deficiency induced changes in the synaptic levels of 5-HT both in basal conditions and after pharmacological stimulation with fenfluramine. Higher levels of basal 5-HT release and lower levels of 5-HT-stimulated release were found in deficient than in control rats. These neurochemical modifications were reversed by supply of the balanced diet provided at birth or during the first 2 weeks of life through the maternal milk, whereas they persisted if the balanced diet was given from weaning (at 3 weeks of age). This suggests that provision of essential fatty acids is durably able to affect brain function and that this is related to the developmental stage during which the deficiency occurs.

In case you folks are wondering why I have resorted to rat studies here, the reason is as follow: These neurochemical analyses require harvesting of brain tissue and in some cases whole brains of the subjects. This is currently illegal in humans!
