Criticism, self esteem and how other people see us - part 2Dear Friend,"Criticism and self esteem" We'll start today off with another quote. Napoleon Hill says in his seminal success writing that one of the four principles of Success is "A mind closed tightly against criticism". The more successful you become however you define success; there will be people who try to hold you back. That is the nature of the universe, give and take. Men must always push against something. Do you think Edison, Tesla, or the Wright brothers got nothing but support? Most people thought they were crazy. But they believed in what they were doing and had the self esteem to persevere in spite of a whole heaping pile of negative comments and remarks. Another wonderful quote that is attributed to Dan Kennedy a marketing guru; "Millions of people wake up each morning expecting to be pissed off...don't disappoint them. It is impossible to go through live and mean anything to anyone if you don't have adversaries of some kind at some point. I remember this when I get nasty grams. Some person out there has found it necessary to give me a raft of you know what. At least I got a reaction! Most times the positive ones out weigh the negatives ones by far anyway.
Now we need to talk about the value of criticism and who you should listen to. There are people in all of our lives who are just magical. They have a way of saying something so smoothly and honestly that even when it is critical we should pay attention to it. I call them friends and family. These people have earned the right to say things I need to hear through years of support and dedication. The person sitting at a computer half way around the world hiding behind a one name email moniker who has opted into my list for the sole purpose of trying to make themselves feel better does not. While I am on that topic, there is something that is almost always universal. The people who criticize me or my products have 1) never bought anything 2) have inflated one name email names like Masterblaster or Kingkong. Chances are they are some scrwany little weeny...Cracks me up. Careful little weenie or I might drop one of my big stone balls on your head! Back to criticism So expect criticism and use it as a measure of your success not your failure unless it come from people you value. Next don't take impersonal things personally. When someone writes a nasty gram they want me to take it personally. But for me its part of the cost of doing business and that's all. It's like insurance and taxes, sure to come and unpleasant but unavoidable. If my mom says that I am a jerk, that is a different matter! In the end how you handle criticism says a lot about your self esteem. Finally let's talk about how other people see you. Here are my thoughts on that mixed in with a little research.
