Dear Friend,
There was a time when I had given up on myself. I let myself slip and slide down the slippery slope of middle-aged pudgedom, convinced that no matter what I did it would not yield the results I wanted.
So why bother?!
This was the point I got to and believe me I was not alone.
I experienced the agony of defeat when my body betrayed me
I have been told the following story and asked the following questions by many others just as sure as I have experienced it myself:
Why spend hours in the gym sweating and grunting your way to the same pudgy out-of-shape body you had on Day 1; the day you started working out!?
Ok maybe you’d see a little muscle here and there. Your arms might grow and your chest expand and maybe you’d even drop a pants size or dress size after 6 months of running countless miles.
If you are a woman maybe your thighs shrunk a wee bit but the cellulite was still there.
And that Butt, Oh can anything reduce that Big Butt?
And GUYS, how about those man boobs and love handles? Next to the Dunlap, (my gut done lap over my belt, also known as the “yawning awning” for the part that it covers and the effect it creates in women!) these are pretty common frustrations.
Many a middle aged and (other aged) man and woman has given up in abject disgust and disheartenment after going great guns and coming face to face with the awful truth in the mirror.
Which is:
For all the hard work and hours of trying, your body hasn’t changed all that much; You’ve been betrayed!!! Betrayed by the magazines and television shows that teach you “How to work out”.
Betrayed by your so-called expert friends whose programs just didn’t work for you even thought they worked wonders for them.
Betrayed by the medical professionals who told you, ‘you just need to walk 30 minutes 3 times a week to be healthy’.
Betrayed by the personal trainers that took your money and didn’t know what you personally needed and then told you YOU were to blame because you didn’t try hard enough or do what they told you.
Betrayed by an entire fitness industry that knows if it fixes your problem you won’t need them any more! (Again it almost sounds like the medical industry, doesn’t it!!!)
And by the way the same applies to the skinny Gandhi type who desperately wants to fill out those shirts or jeans with some solid muscle only to find they haven’t grown an ounce of it after weeks of hard work and money spent on gym memberships and trainers who have not helped them.
Betrayed Betrayed Betrayed!!!!!
I sympathize because I am not only writing about my patients and my guy and gal friends but also myself.
How many of My Excuses are You Using?!!!
Naturally being a scientist and a doctor I also came up with medical/scientific reasons like:
My genetics are limiting me
I have a really slow metabolism
I can’t find the time for exercise
My family was puffy and shapeless so I am destined to be as well
The experts told me to accept my limitations and be happy with the lousy body I have, after all I am still “healthy”
I have tried my hardest and gotten nowhere so there is no point in trying anymore
And my now personal favorite compromise/excuse/justification: I don’t want to look like an underwear model or a weight lifter; after all I am almost 50!
How Denial Led to Salvation
Funny thing is that it was in this state of denial and lowered expectations that the answer presented itself in the form of the World’s Greatest Trainer.
Unlike previous years I didn’t have to travel the globe to get the answer.
