The Meaning of Life, a Message from a Departed FriendDear Friend,The Pope's recent passing got me reflecting on the meaning of life. I suppose everyone has a different interpretation but if you study theology there is often a common theme in many if not most religions. Personally I have always thought that since we all die, it's what we do in between birth and death that counts. I think the Pope can be very proud of his life. Naturally I too want to live a long healthy productive life but if not long then I'll certainly take healthy and productive. That is why I decided to create my own supplement line. For me, I can extend my knowledge and expertise in this fashion to far more people than I ever could before. In my recent reflections I could not help but think of a story a close friend and client, Craig recently told me. It was the story of two of his friends Joe age 48 and Sam age 54. These two guys had been friends for many years, since soon after Joe graduated from college as a matter of fact. They had lots in common; same upbringing, same neighborhood, same schools and eventually they became business partners. For the next 2 decades each of them chased after the good life. They worked very hard sacrificing much as they built their business.
They sacrificed family life, time with their wives and kids; they ate poorly often together at work, and never found the time to exercise even though it was a constant resolution for both of them. But they did make money, and lots of it. By your and my standards, Both Sam and the younger Joe would be considered rich men. At some point Sam decided it was time to live a little. Both his kids were in college, college was paid for and there was money in investments earning enough interest that Sam felt he could ease of just a little bit, For his 54th Birthday he bought 2 things he had always wanted. The first was a 2 week cruise in the Caribbean for him and his wife. The next was a custom chopper. For those of you who aren't familiar with a "chopper" it is a kind of motorcycle that is usually unique, expensive and rare. Sam had ridden when he was younger but when the kids came along he stopped. He had always wanted to get back into it and now he could afford his dream bike. My friend continued the story of Sam and Joe by telling me how much Sam loved that customer chopper. Its gleaming paint, tons of chrome and big bore V twin engine with ungodly torque represented total freedom for him. About 2 weeks after he got the bike he went out on a long ride. When he came home he told his wife he felt a little sick to his stomach and very tired, so he was going up to lay down. He thought he was just coming down with flu or something. His wife found him dead in bed 2 hours later, the victim of a heart attack according to the coroner. He never made the cruise he had promised his wife. This left Joe alone in charge of the business and Sam's wife alone in charge of 2 kids who were in college. While money wasn't the issue I am sure all 3 of them, Sam, Joe and Sam's wife (and their kids!) would have preferred to have Sam with us still. Sam's death hit Joe like a lightening bolt! What was all this money and hard work for if you weren't around to enjoy it? Joe has since shed 20lbs visits the gym regularly and has cut back his work hours by selling the company and working as a consultant for it on a very limited basis. He does at least half the food shopping and cooking now. He has found other ways to make money that are easier and allow him to work at what he loves. What did he do? He started a company that sells exotic Italian sports cars (DeTomaso Mangustas, Panteras and the odd Ferrari here and there). He now lovingly wrenches these beautiful works of automotive art. He has also given much of the proceeds from this company to various charities, all in Sam's name. My friend Craig was deeply moved by this story.
