Fish Oil Stabilizes Coronary Plaques or Fighting with Your Local Cardiologist Part 1Fish Oil vs. Pharmaceutical MedicineDear Friend,One of the "friendly" arguments I often get into with my friendly neighborhood Cardiologists is the mechanism by which Fish Oil works to prevent heart attacks. You see there are a lot of doctors out there who have not yet recognized the value of Omega 3 fatty acids in preventing Heart Disease. There are several reasons for this. First is that Fish Oil can't really be patented. Mother Nature put it here and she is not in the least concerned about hiring an army of Drug Reps to promote her products. I reviewed some of the studies before that showed the remarkable correlation between Drug Company funding of studies, and positive results. Since there are no drug reps to pound on them everyday about the benefits of fish oil, it's a case of "Out of sight Out of Mind". Yours truly, the lowly Internist and Anti-Aging doc has the task of educating people including my fellow docs. Now for another little "Insider Tidbit" about doctors. There is a pecking order among doctors. It is unspoken but very real no the less. This pecking order determines who listens to whom. The actual factors that go into determining your standing on the medical totem pole are the following. 1) How much money you make. This is a fascinating by product of something that happened way back in the 1960's. Back then an Insurance organization Called Blue Cross / Blue Shield was started. It was to become the largest national medical Insurance structure in our history. On the board at that time and responsible for making decisions about how much docs got paid for things were surgeons and sub specialists. A decision was made at that time that procedural specialties such as Cardiology, neurosurgery, and Orthopedic surgery etc were "more valuable" than "thinking " subspecialties like primary care and Internal Medicine.
Things have changed a lot since then but that basic premise holds true. So true in fact that if I do a Sigmoidoscopy (colonic exam) or a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), I get paid less than the gastroenterologists ("stomach docs") or Neurologists (nerve docs), at least in Pennsylvania. 2) The perceived "danger" level of what the doctor is doing. No one can argue that sticking a wire into somebody's heart and blowing up a balloon or putting a stent in here is inherently much more dangerous than talking about there cholesterol. What could be argued is that if the proper things were done at the time of each patient visit, patients might not need so many procedures. Ultimately this would save a lot of money for the almighty Insurance gods but unfortunately the very name of this kind of thing conjures up an automatic "DECLINED" for most Insurance claims. This "kind of thing" called "Preventative Medicine"!!!! 3) Next on the list is are some very real considerations amount of Malpractice paid, and number of years spent in school. The Bottom Line on all this is that someone who lives and dies by Interventions like cardiac catch, pays tons of money to be able to do them, and has spent an extra year or two honing their skills is not likely to listen to someone like me!! So, one of the things that gets discussed when I bring up my favorite topic, Dr Dave's Best Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil is why it is so much more effective than statins at preventing heart attacks. The typical answer is,"Well it just lowers Sudden Death by 45%, that's all!" Well excuse me!!!! Even if that were all it would still be an achievement. Many of these folks are the same ones hat used to say< The effect of Fish Oil has only been proven in dog hearts, not human hearts. In April a study done at Brigham and Women's hospital, a prestigious Harvard affiliate, and often the source of research published in the ultra conservative and VERY ANTI anti aging Journal showed that Fish Oil injected Intravenously into the hearts of patients with deadly arrhythmias (irregular heart beats) did a remarkable job of preventing them, far better than most drugs would have! Oops! A few cardiologists had to eat crow on that one. So now we have them admitting that all those animal studies had merit in real live sick people. It wasn't hard to convince them about the anti-platelet activity of Fish Oil, since this is the final event that leads to many deadly heart attacks, and we know from many human studies that Fish Oil really improves your chances here. My next big challenge is to convince the guys that actually go in there and unplug these blocked arteries that here are many, many other benefits to Fish Oil. Some of you may be wondering, "Why would they want to here this, You'll put them out of business!" Believe it or not, I have no doubt that most heart doctors would love to see their case load go down. In tomorrow's email I'll show you the reasons why anyone concerned about America's Number 1 Killer, Heart Disease should be on Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil, and some of the other ways that Fish Oil can provide amazing benefits to the heart and circulatory system.
