Getting the Most from Your DietDear Friend,The Good the Bad and the Ugly of today's popular diets. Let's be frank and honest diets don't work, or do they? Well let's put it this way, if all you do is diet, then that's all you do. You are likely to lose some weight and you may even keep it off if you stick to the diet, but by their very nature some diets are just not healthy to stay on. That set's you up for failure from the very start. Here's how to get the most from today's modern diets, one by one. Many moons ago I went on the Pritikin program. I lost a lot of weight and a lot of fat. I started to enjoy the taste of salads with no dressing and I got rid of some ugly love handles. Nathan Pritikin who touted his diet as the salvation for everything from heart disease to cancer died of leukemia at the age of 69. Still he out lived a certain death sentence of heart disease for 30 odd years and was relatively healthy until just before he died. His cancer by the way was probably caused by skin radiation treatments given for psoriasis in the 1950's. Where did Pritikin get his stuff from and who has it now? Pritikin was heavily influenced by Paul Bragg. Pritikin's original stuff lives on in a foundation named after him but of late Dean Ornish has repackaged it as the Eat more Weigh less program. These diets are ultra low fat. Pritikin also stressed vegetables and fruits but no added sugar as does Ornish. The biggest problem is that these ultra low fats diets do not contain enough essential fatty acids. Recall most folks in the USA don't get nearly enough Omega 3's to begin with so you may be starting out behind the 8 ball! Make sure you take fish oil on any of your low fat diets. In addition the absence of fat in these diets may lead to lower levels of certain vitamins (A, D, E, and K). So this would be a good place for a Monster multi! Doctors and dieticians still use these diets country wide to help people with heart disease, but the omission of fish oil and multis from these diets is a big mistake in my opinion. These are the types of diets that are used in the treatment of morbid obesity. They work well with supervision but much less so without. They are just too hard for most people to stick to. They lack lots of things in the effort to cut calories. This type of diet would greatly benefit from a multi, fish oil and berry boost since oft times there are not even enough fruits and veggies to meet the minimum needs of the average person, let alone the obese person who may already be nutritionally starved. Low carb This includes the Zone diet, Atkins diet and South Beach to name a few. In cutting out dairy products people tend to get calcium deficient. Folate and B vites are also a problem since some of these diets limit access to veggies and fruits. The safety of this diet has been studied out to around 6 weeks. At that level they appear safe, beyond that there are some serious questions. So there you have it in a nutshell. The good the bad the ugly of today's popular diets with a tip of the hat to some of the pioneers.
