How does it Feel to Be Left behind Dr Dave?Dear Friend,"Dr Dave, first let me say that I like you. At least I like what you write, your emails and your articles. If you are anything like the person you are when you write the emails and talk on the radio then I like you. So please don't take this too hard but you are being left behind, and I wonder how does it feel? You wrote about inflammation, heart disease, and fish oil 2 years ago, now Barry Sears your arch rival takes what you said and writes a book from it. Everyday on TV I see a new "doctor" hawking some new Fish Oil product. Just the other day I saw a company called "Nordic Naturals" say their stuff was ultra pure because it is all caught above the Artic Circle. Talk shows radio ads QVC etc but no Dr Dave. Where are you? Do you know you are being left out of the Fish Oil Revolution! It's like the first Astronaut to walk on the moon but everyone knows someone else! Well Gee James thanks, I think! Thanks for recognizing that I have been a driving force in the "revolution" as you call it. And thanks for being with me long enough to remember those emails/articles on inflammation. I have to admit James' email really got me thinking. I have never considered myself a "poor lost" or forgotten soul and I do not now. But I think it is time for a reality check. I did not start the fish oil revolution. As a matter of fact I can remember my Dad coming home armed with a big bottle of Fish Oil gel caps when I was a teenager. I distinctly remember him telling me that they were supposed to be incredibly good for you. Well they smelled bad and repeated on my terribly even at age 14 so I lasted about 2 weeks. My Dad then in his mid 50's (fifties for those of you whose computers do funny things to punctuation marks and numbers!) was obviously feeling a little closer to his mortality. He lasted about 2 weeks longer before the fish burp got to him. You see in those days we didn't have Pharmaceutical Grad Purity and freshness. So did my Dad start the whole thing? Well no actually because while he brought it into my consciousness millions of mom's across the country forced tablespoons full of god-awful tasting cod liver oil down kids throats for decades before this! Again no purity testing but who knows in those days, there probably weren't radiation and pollution issues. Next Barry Sears is not my arch rival! Now as to Barry Sears using my ideas from years ago to write his latest book... Well if he did, there is no law against reinterpreting what someone else says and Barry is apparently good at writing books. He seems like a decent guy and while I don't think his books are very user friendly, but I have heard him speak as a scientist and he seems a knowledgeable guy. As to his fish oil I know it is not made by him and that Sears labs is just a name , but again nothing wrong with that. If I know Barry it's probably a decent product but I can't say I've ever tried it. Most people who sell vitamins don't formulate their own and are at the mercy of the company that makes them as far as quality. I don't like that model but it is not illegal! Both he and I rely on research scientists to produce data that we interpret for our products. In my case I have cared for live patients, he cannot because he is a PhD not an MD. Still this does not make him dumb, ignorant or dishonorable I think he simply choose that route for himself. As to the Nordic Naturals people, again I have not tried their products either. I have met one of their owners who claims to be a Norwegian fisherman or some such. He did have a Nordic sounding accent when I spoke with him. My only gripe with them is that they claim their purity based on the fact that all of their fish are caught above the Arctic Circle and therefore not polluted. Unless they have special fishing grounds I personally find that hard to believe because all of our fish come from above the Arctic Circle too and they still need purifying! Look, I am a Doctor first and foremost, not a businessman or a fisherman. I am not interested nor do I have the financial backing to compete with big companies like the above. All I can do is make a better product and sell it to those who want the best. I started, financed and run this business myself. I don't have and don't want a lot of financial backers. QVC is not yet within my reach. In addition while Fish Oil is my biggest product I have as you know branched out and made several other unique formulations that no one else has. Most of the other people James mentioned make only Fish Oil so that sets me apart as well! So maybe I will get left behind. Maybe only a few people will know where the ideas come from.
