'Juiced', Jose Canseco, Major League Baseball and Steroids' Part 2Dear Friend,Today I want to wrap up the topic (for the moment!) of MLB and Jose Canseco's book, "Juiced". In yesterday's letter to you I discussed what I thought Canseco wanted to be remembered for. Here is what I think he should be remembered for. 1) Telling the truth about drug usage in baseball. 2) Putting it in the face of baseball's establishment that at the very least allowed if not encouraged steroid, and growth hormone abuse. 3) Blowing the lid off all the people who are and were using the drugs, and forcing people to admit that baseball is as crooked in that regard as any sport. 4) Defrocking the MLB image of a clean All American institution. 5) Pointing the finger of truth at Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire 2 other poor lost souls who made millions!
Here is what I think he should not be remembered as. 1) The man who brought steroids to baseball! Come on Jose there were many before you, they just played the game (and I don't mean baseball!) and shut their mouths! 2) A poor lost soul who never stood a chance because of who and what he was. That is a bad excuse for making and losing millions. Besides the book is actually a fun good read though not rocket scientist material. I am sure the book will put some money in Jose's pocket. Its timing is also impeccable. How coincidental that it comes when the whole issue of steroids in MLB is really heating up! So how do we solve this problem and is it a problem at all? Well in his well written introduction Canseco points out that steroids are here to stay as is Growth Hormone. He also points out correctly that they can enhance the quality of life of millions of people. I agree totally! The problem is one of degrees. The amount of steroids and HGH needed to restore optimal health is far less then the amount need to make someone huge and strong. As a matter of fact there are plenty of people running around out there on both of these compounds that you would never even know it by looking at them. The simply had deficiencies corrected and now they are back to "normal" biochemically. They are not huge gargantuan muscle heads! Among that group of "normal" people are grandmothers, sisters, uncles, and little old men and women who are simply living better, feeling better and more robust than before. They are more resistant to disease, falls, memory problems and so on than their untreated counterparts. They are the total opposite of multi million dollar athletes! What is to be done and who is to blame? I think the answer can be summed up by some marketing genius who centuries ago came up with the phrase (probably in Latin!): "Give the people what they want!" That's right! You and I are the real culprits! Listen! We live in a capitalistic society where making a buck is serious business for everyone, like it or not. The more bucks at stake, the more serious the business and the more likely our old "The End Justifies the Means" Friend Machiavelli rules. According to Canseco if he had not come along, MLB would have slid into oblivion. How about this? Someone else would have "stepped up to the plate!" There is enough financial pressure for the powers that be to justify just about any abuse as long as the American Public bites into the pie and opens their wallets. Sorry but if we stopped bankrolling this and other sports where steroid use was rampant and if we the people demanded more effective testing this issue could become a non issue very fast. Will it happen, not likely! People value entertainment a lot higher than most realize. What will happen is a lot of political grandstanding and some toothless measures that amount to nothing. So, is it a problem? Absolutely! While I don't care if people like Canseco and Bonds inject themselves with any number of chemicals to make up for what nature did not give them, there is no getting around the fact that they do by virtue of their star status affect the behavior of our children. We see steroid and HGH use in Junior High level now! Why? Because these kids want to be like their heroes, and they want to be outstanding and use any and every edge to get there, never mind the consequences. Ultimately it's up to us as consumers, If we stop watching and paying for this game and we take a hard stance on people who lie about their use of performance enhancing drugs all the way up to the top of the organization (Hint: its not just the players!), we could at least have the truth. Then every time you turned on the TV and watched a sport you'd know that 90% of the people on the field were on performance enhancing drugs! Some people have suggested an "open" league for the drug users, and a "clean" league for the non drug users. Before that happens there needs to be effective ways to test for the drugs!
