'Juiced', Jose Canseco, Major League Baseball and Steroids' Part 1Dear Friend,Over the past couple of weeks I have gotten several emails asking me to comment on the current state of MLB ( Major League Baseball), drug abuse, specifically performance enhancers, and the book by Jose Canseco called 'Juiced'. First off I have pretty much read the entire book in segments since someone gave me a copy of it. I am not going to critique the book as a literary work because it isn't. There are some things that should be pointed out however. First and foremost Mr. Canseco admits to being self taught about steroids, growth hormone and other performance enhancing issues.
This is both good and bad. At least he is speaking from experience. So many of the people writing about steroids and growth hormone these days, especially the ones who write negative things don't know their backside from their front when it comes to these chemicals. In my everyday medical practice I have seen hundreds of patients who have benefited greatly from these compounds, both athlete and non athlete. Let me say once again for the record that while I have had world class athletes as clients, I do not simply hand out drugs to make people better performers. If people meet the requirements as measured n a lab for being deficient in HGH or Steroids, and they understand the risks and benefits, then I will treat them. But only if they actually need it. That need does not include getting bigger and stronger to play sports or compete in body building contests. From reading Mr. Canseco's book, I would not want him injecting my patients! There are things that I do admire about this book. First it tells the truth. Most if not all MLB athletes and certainly many other athletes have and do continue to use steroids, growth hormone and other performance enhancers that are "banned" by their sports. Next, Canseco is not afraid to name names. Case in point the very specific instances of how he injected Mark McGwire with steroids Growth Hormone. Was their ever really any doubt. What was McGwire's explanation? "Well I used an over the counter supplement called androstenedione!" In other words according to Canseco that is total BS. But what happened is more interesting. Andro as it was called on the street got banned. Now don't get me wrong, I personally am not sorry to see it go, but it just goes to show you how little logic their is in the regulation of these compounds. It also goes to show you how frivolous and reactionary the regulating bodies like the FDA are when it comes to examining supplements. This disturbs me because it begs the question: "What's next? Vitamin C!?" Everybody blamed Andro because it was convenient and easy. This way we can let our "heroes" off the hook and not tarnish the reputation of MLB. Now everyone knows that Andro had nothing to do with McGwire's success. So are they going to bring back Andro? Not likely! Will it stop the witch hunt on all other such supplements? Not likely! Will it stop the use of the real culprits Androgenic Steroids and Human Growth Hormone in professional sports? Not likely! So why did Canseco blow the whistle on the whole drug abuse issue. Well I have my theories. Mr. Canseco would like us to believe that he is the sole savior of MLB. His introduction of steroids and Growth Hormone to the MLB ranks created a bigger stronger ball player which in turn led to a more exciting game. One that was faster and modernized to sit the digital age tastes of today's Americans. I think this is how Canseco would like to be remembered but I highly doubt he was the first person to use or show others how to use performance enhancing drugs. Next Mr. Canseco made millions out of MLB, but according to his book MLB conspired to take it all away from him because he was not the stereotypical hero. His Cuban heritage stood in his way and ultimately was the reason why MLB came after him. While I have no doubt that MLB had/has the same problems that other sports did/do in accepting non white athletes, I suspect that Mr. Canseco would still have his millions if he had "played ball" ( in other words behaved) the way all MLB athletes are expected to behave regardless of race creed or color. If his accusations are true that someone was our to get him, then it is far more likely that he said or did something that ruffled some feathers in high places and threatened the establishment. Might that "thing" be the threat to expose all of the drug use by MLB's major stars?
