56 men who risked it allDear Friend,"56 men who risked it all" In a few short hours I will be hosting my annual 4th of July party. Each year the crowd changes just a bit. This year it will be a modest 18 people. I will say a toast before we offer thanks for our food. I will toast this great nation and the people of it as a unique experiment in freedom. Flawed and sometimes misguided but still the best man has achieved yet as witnessed by the number of people from all corners of the globe that want to live here still. I will toast the 56 men who braved the gallows back in 1774 and again in 1776 at the formation of the Continental Congress and the later reading of the Declaration of Independence. They staked their lives on an idea that bore fruit and still does over 250 years later. I will remind everyone who has been abroad and that will be at lest half of the people at the table of the feeling we all get when we step off the plane in America again. It's good to be home. And I will say the following which if you have read my previous emails may look or sound a bit familiar:
The Meaning of Independence As I ponder this Independence Day I have to tell you I think it is Misnamed, at least in my opinion. If it was up to me I would call it Freedom Day instead. Now I realize the historical significance of our country's escape from British Rule but even more this day represents the birth of a nation that epitomizes man's quest for true freedom. That freedom seems to transcend the boundaries of nationalism as we see in France or Germany or other free nations of the world where the population is more homogeneous (more alike ethnically religiously) etc. Yes, our constitution extends these rights to all men and women. The recent conflict in Iraq has severed to remind us that this is not so for a very, very large portion of humanity. So when I think of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness it reminds me of when I sat down to right my own personal "mission statement" You see I am a firm believer in written goals in order to maintain focus. I think you should write them down every single day at least as pertains to that day. I also think you need to review your Life's Goals every single day. To me the pursuit of these goals is the ultimate expression of freedom. As you look over my personal list you will notice they have an affirmation like quality about them. This is deliberate. This is my way of adding the all critical emotion to the goal which makes it come alive. I can tell you that the extent and frequency that I do this equals my likelihood of achieving that goal! Here Goes: 1) I want more life! More time to explore and experiment and broaden my horizons. I want more time to meet and learn from and teach people in my life. 2) I want optimal health. I have often referred to this as "hyper health". I want to cruise through the flu season and other illness prone times without having to worry about getting sick. I don't want to and in point of fact do not worry about heart disease cancer and Alzheimer's in large part because of the supplements I have designed. 3) I want to continue to be able to play with younger people in what ever sport I choose.
