How to avoid Breast Cancer and what to do if You get ItDear Friend,Breast Cancer remains a terrifying disease for women in this country. Unfortunately the current methods of detection do not guarantee survival. Monthly self breast exams do not seem to change outcomes, and the efficacy of mammograms while proven often leads to unneeded procedures. Still it remains the best tool we have at early detection. In an effort to understand how better to prevent Breast Cancer in American populations, our scientists have turned to the East for answers. Japanese women eating a traditional Japanese diet have a low incidence of Breast Cancer. Once they move to the U.S. and eat our diet, they get breast cancer at the same rate within 1 generation. The same thing happens to Japanese men with colon Cancer. There are many theories about why this happens. In terms of Breast cancer xeno estrogens, that is estrogens from animal sources, and in some cases phyto estrogens from plant sources have been implicated. Two years ago the Women''s health Initiative Study provided data from thousands of participants that suggested that horse estrogens were very harmful for human females. It is not too hard to imagine that cows that are fed estrogen to increase milk production might pass those estrogens along to the people that are consuming that milk. In the same vein one can imagine that beef cattle that are given steroids and estrogens to increase the amount of tender meat they produce might not also "pollute" people who consume this beef with excess estrogen and steroids. Long the bailiwick of Alternative Health guru''s the actual studies on this issue are less than conclusive. Personally I do think this is a factor but I am not yet sure if it''s a major factor. What I do know for sure is that both the fish and beef cattle industries are beginning to supplement the feed they give to their animals with Omega 3 fatty acids to return them to a more natural "free range" composition. When one looks at the major difference in breast cancer rates between Japanese women and America women one thing stands out. The amount of fish Oil consumption. This above all other variables seems to account for the differences.
Those other variables include: Age, smoking vegetable consumption and even family history. Those of you who have read my mini series on breast cancer are aware of the many biochemical and "nutritional genomic" ways that fish Oil directly prevents and inhibits breast cancer. You are aware that the American Cancer Society now recommends increased Omega 3 fatty acid consumption of the long chain variety which is : FISH OIL! When consumed as part of the diet fish Oil actually penetrates breast tissue. The amount of Omega 3 fish Oil in Breast tissue seems to be directly correlated with the likelihood of getting Breast Cancer as well as the outcomes in women who already have Breast Cancer. There is no Question in my mind that it effects overall survival and improves Breast Cancer outcomes in Men and Women. I try to get all of my Breast Cancer patients to supplement and of course anyone with a family history as well. Frankly I begin to counsel women in their 20''s and 30''s to take fish Oil because I strongly believe in its preventative value. If you or someone you know and/or love has, or has had breast cancer, or a family history of Breast cancer, tell them about fish Oil. You may save a life! Dietary long-chain n-3 fatty acids for the prevention of cancer: a review of potential mechanisms. Larsson SC, Kumlin M, Ingelman-Sundberg M, Wolk A. Division of Nutritional Epidemiology, The National Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. susanna.larsson@imm.ki.se Increasing evidence from animal and in vitro studies indicates that n-3 fatty acids, especially the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, present in fatty fish and fish oils inhibit carcinogenesis. The epidemiologic data on the association between fish consumption, as a surrogate marker for n-3 fatty acid intake, and cancer risk are, however, somewhat less consistent. This review highlights current knowledge of the potential mechanisms of the anticarcinogenic actions of n-3 fatty acids. Moreover, a possible explanation of why some epidemiologic studies failed to find an association between n-3 fatty acid intake and cancer risk is provided. Several molecular mechanisms whereby n-3 fatty acids may modify the carcinogenic process have been proposed. These include suppression of arachidonic acid-derived eicosanoid biosynthesis; influences on transcription factor activity, gene expression, and signal transduction pathways; alteration of estrogen metabolism; increased or decreased production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species; and mechanisms involving insulin sensitivity and membrane fluidity. 1: Am J Clin Nutr. 1997 Oct;66(4 Suppl):998S-1003S. Dietary fatty acids and cancer. Rose DP. Division of Nutrition and Endocrinology, American Health Foundation, Valhalla, NY 10595, USA. david@westnet.com Results from epidemiologic studies are controversial with respect to the relation between total dietary fat consumption and breast cancer risk; there is more general agreement that a high-fat diet is associated with aggressive prostate cancer. Recent epidemiologic investigations and laboratory experimentation with animal models suggest that relatively high intakes of long-chain n-3 fatty acids, and n-9 fatty acids present in olive oil, reduce breast cancer risk by mechanisms that may involve modification of the biosynthesis of eicosanoids from n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Although there is only limited support for the hypothesis that total fat intake affects breast cancer risk, there is experimental evidence that n-6 fatty acids, again via eicosanoid production, may enhance breast cancer invasion and metastasis; n-3 fatty acids may exert a suppressive effect. Although studies of prostate cancer are less advanced, the indication is that a high fat intake promotes the emergence of the metastatic phenotype; further research is required to establish the roles of the various classes of fatty acids but it does appear that the long-chain n-3 fatty acids may also retard prostate cancer progression. 1: Pharmacol Ther. 1999 Sep;83(3):217-44. Omega-3 fatty acids as cancer chemopreventive agents. Rose DP, Connolly JM. Division of Nutrition and Endocrinology, American Health Foundation, Valhalla, NY 10595, USA. david@westnet.com There is both epidemiologic and experimental evidence that the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (FAs), which occur at high levels in some fish oils, exert protective effects against some common cancers, notably those of breast, colon, and, perhaps, prostate. Multiple mechanisms are involved in this chemopreventive activity, including suppression of neoplastic transformation, cell growth inhibition and enhanced apoptosis, and antiangiogenicity; however, a common feature of most of these biological effects is the inhibition of eicosanoid production from omega-6 FA precursors. Several of the known risk factors for breast, and colon cancer may be favorably modified by dietary omega-3 FA supplementation, and the implementation of clinical chemoprevention trials is now feasible. ![]() Dave Woynarowski, M.D., CPT The Nation's #1 Anti-Aging Physician P.S.
