Criticism, self esteem and how other people see us - part 1Dear Friend,"Criticism, self esteem - part 1" Today you may find this email a bit off the beaten path. I have in the past been called a lot of different things, good bad and ugly. I am going to talk about some of those things and how I handle them. Every week I get both kind and encouraging emails and negative ones as well. One of my employees forwarded me an email that she said she really didn't want to but she felt I needed to see it. It was in response to my Father's Day email. The gist of it was that the email was contrived to sell products and had no other value. This is the risk you take when you pour out your heart and soul in front of a large group of people. As they say, "There's one in every crowd". My employee was a bit surprised at my lack of anger over said email and wanted to know "how I stay so calm". Well that is the gist of this email as well as other valuable pointers on how we view ourselves. First the topic of criticism and strategies that work for me.
A very wise person once said that opinions are the cheapest thing in the world. Everyone has them and almost all of them are worthless. Good words to live by. So when you are criticized, consider the source. No one likes criticism but if you let every disparaging word that someone says to you affect you you will spend your time having your life run by other people and what they think. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, don't waste yours worrying about what other people think. Next remember that criticism often comes from someone's own insecurity. Not in the specific sense, but in the general sense. Here is an example. I know a person who did not get much attention growing up. Her parents were older and very busy with their own problems. They were not abusive, just not attentive. It has been said that the immediate response of your mother, or your other primary care giver is the determining factor in how you react when your own needs are expressed. If your needs are met, you feel loved and accepted. If not you feel rejected. Interesting enough it has also been said that we try to recreate our earliest experiences for the rest of our lives. So the accepted and loved person has no trouble accepting love and nurturing. The rejected one will spend the rest of their lives recreating the rejection to the point of turning others off and forcing them away even where they are beloved by those people. It's better to be right than loved! Now I don't put 100% faith in this theory and nothing is written in stone, but it does explain those people in our lives who don't handle friendship, love or closeness very well, at least in some cases. Naturally this has a lot to do with self esteem. If your needs are worthwhile early in life you feel worthwhile later in life. I said above that you should consider the source of the criticism. Hey human beings are social creatures by nature. If we don't feel accepted, we are in for a very rough time emotionally. Loners are often people who are just out to prove they don't need anyone else because they never had anyone else! If your motivation for behaving a certain way is to prove something or comes out of anger, you are probably doing yourself more harm than good. I remember that when I get nasty grams as well. Now I also have a little secret. I never see most of the nasty grams anymore. The business has grown, and the volume of emails multiplied logarithmically (math majors hold your tongues!) It is very rare that I even know what bad stuff has been written about me personally. So you can call that "Dr Dave's Pollyanna Principle". You don't even allow the criticism to get to you.
