"10 Ways to win"

Perhaps I should call this the "Miniseminar that wouldn't die" because the metabolic articles have spun off so many other topics and questions.

One that repeatedly cropped up was, "How do I find the time to exercise?"

Another was," How do you stay motivated?"

Now reading this I have to smile because you are talking to a guy who routinely put in 70 hour weeks and somehow found the time to train for and run marathons, lift, do Combat Conditioning and train in Jiu Jitsu and Combat wrestling although not all things all at once or at the same time.

So here are my tips.

1)     Prioritize. If exercise is not a priority you won't do it. My daily list of "to do's" is usually only 3 to 5 things long with about 10 other "possibles" in case their is extra time.

You can bet exercise is in that top 3 to 5 more often than not.

2)     Write down your exercise goals "I want to swim 100 laps easily by three months from now, run a 10 K in under 40 minutes, bench press 500 lbs, etc. etc.

This will help you focus. To make it even better spend 2 minutes after you are done writing down what you did and where you are at. In that "exercise journal" you will find the keys to your successes and failures, I promise you.

3)     Find a like minded individual among your friends or acquaintances.

Most people are looking for someone to help keep them motivated. Here is the answer to that problem.

When you feel like bailing, your friend may keep you from missing. I recall during training for long runs I often dragged myself out in the hot summer or freezing winter mornings because I had an appointment with a buddy who committed to being there.

If someone is giving up something for the sole purpose of meeting you, you are less likely to let them (and yourself) down.

4)     Start somewhere.

An ancient Chinese proverb says, "The journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step". Remember in ancient China or ancient anywhere 1000 miles was "longer" than it is today.

Somewhere in the hundreds of articles and emails I've written to you I detailed how I first got going in exercise after Med School.

I forced myself to do 5 minutes everyday. No more no less. At the end of 30 days I "allowed" myself to do more.

I had done several things.

First I started a habit. If I had stopped after 30 days I would have missed it sorely. Next I proved to myself that I could "find" time everyday no matter how little.

Finally I was dying to do more than 5 minutes and had kind of set up a reward system... "If I make the 30 days without missing then I get what I couldn't have", more time to exercise.

My next jump was 30 minutes 4 to 5 times a week. Let me tell you it was easy and I can always find at least that much time. 2 hours out of 128 in a week.

Yes, I sure can do that.

5)     Maybe you haven't had an athletic hero since you were a kid. Well it's time to revisit your childhood then. I still have heroes of all kinds in the sense that these people have at least one quality that I would like to emulate.

Some of my athletic heroes are Lance Armstrong, Matt Furey, Muhammad Ali, Randy Couture, Bruce Lee and Manolo Orantez.

Just the other day I embarked on what was to become a grueling interval training session alternating sprints and jogs. At one point I felt pretty awful and wanted to quit.

The voice in my head said, "Would Lance quit?" Hell No!

Goofy and immature as it sounds the mind needs these tricks when the going gets rough and your thinking starts being more about survival than performance.

I often like to imagine one of my heroes or mentors is there with me at the time. If they were do you think I would be whining about being tired?

I have personally met and spent time with Muhammad Ali, Matt Furey, Karl Gotch, Lou Thez, Pedro Sauer and several other top level athletes who do not want you to know they are my patients. * (Please note I am not implying that any of the above are under my care!)

Is it so hard to believe that someday I might meet Lance Armstrong or Randy Couture or Royce Gracie?

Do I want to have to make excuses in front of people like this?

Do you?

By the way, meeting and staying in contact or occasionally training with high level athletes is a great way to stay motivated. You better bring your game when you show up even though you are not in their league.

6)     Keep it simple stupid! By applying the K.I.S.S. principle you avoid complicated routines and new sports that require skill development.

The later is great if you are bored but if you haven't even started yet, you can't be bored so get the habit down before you dilute your already precious time.

When I was first starting my routines years ago a friend suggested I use a Nordic Track tm to get in aerobic shape.

While I think they are great, I could not just hope on the thing and "make it go" without developing some skill first.

I figured putting one foot in front of the other was something that I should have down pretty good by age 30 (how old I was when I started again?) so I chose running.

Walking works just fine, but start somewhere and keep it easy and simple.

Later when you are up to the challenge and want to expand your horizons you can develop new skilled exercise patterns.

7)     Reward yourself when you achieve something noteworthy. When I finished my first marathon I decided to treat myself to another one the year after in a foreign country.

In this case it turned out to be Reykjavik, Iceland. Planning for that one started the day after I met my first goal.

8)     Mentor or teach someone what you know. When I was training for the first marathon, I attracted a couple of other people who were at least interested. I think they thought that running a marathon was pretty cool and that they could not do it, or didn't know anyone who had done it.

I had the pleasure of their company during my training and taught them what I could.

So they learned from my experiences. At least 3 of them went on to run Marathons of their own (probably faster than me doggone it!)

9)     Be realistic.

Unless you get cancer you will not permanently lose weight by dieting alone. So understand this. Apply it and live it or be fat and happy.
