What is the World Greatest Anti-Oxidant?Dear Friend,Here is an interesting email from a fellow who, like you, is very concerned about his health. Dr. Dave, I have a question about a product called XANGO- ( Mangosteen) because it show to have some of the highest antioxidant of any fruit as a food group that I am aware of can you provide some feedback. I am also told that there is a look of information on the fruit Mangosteen. What do you know about it? As far as extract from Garcinia mangostana the parent compound of Mangosteen I think there is some merit to their use in Thailand. As far as anti-oxidant value there is again a bit of debate. Some people use something called ORAC which is an artificial lab derived value ...I don't like this one. I believe in amount of anthocyanidin per serving as a true measure of clinically relevant anti-oxidant power. This is what the studies use as a gold standard. For example one capsule of Berry Boost has 3X the anthocyanidins of a pint of blueberries. I would pit that against Mangosteen or any other anti-oxidant product. Anthocyanidins have been called the most important plant derived chemical ever discovered and I believe that since I have seen the data and what the product can do for real live people using Berry Boost. So what is an anthocyanidin in English please?!
Well in simple terms anthocyanidins are part of a chemical group that are very strong dyes. They are part of the chemicals that give fruits their red, purple, and blue colors. There is a direct correlation between their staining power and their anti-oxidant potency. If you want a live fire demonstration of this take one capsule of Berry Boost, open it and dump it in 8 ounces of water. Don't wear anything white when you do this or it will be purple before you are done. Stir it lightly for a few seconds and then try and look through it. You can't! This stuff makes Octopus Ink look transparent! The other real world example is kind of funny. When the Berry Boost powdered concentrate came in and we ran the first batch to test it we warned our pharmacy that it was very very powerful and in raw powder form would stain anything it came into contact with. While this may be accurate one has to consider what "as a food group" means. What is the dose? In the above example of Berry Boost I tell you what one capsule is equal to in real life dosages and compared to a food group you can identify with, blueberries. If you must take this Mangosteen product you could certainly take it with my Fish Oil. How much good it actually can do for you is questionable. The site claims its benefits are scientifically proven. But a search of Pub Med yields only 20 results in the literature and many if not most have nothing to do with health. Those that do are not human studies. The ingredients in Berry Boost have just shy of 150 references in the National Library of Medicine some of them in humans. Fish Oil has almost 10,000 references in this same database, many in humans making Berry Boost and Fish Oil a fantastic combination for your health. Still to be fair maybe the people that own these sites can speak Thai and have access to literature that I do not! Also if this compound is as famous in Thailand as people who push it say it is then one would think that there may be some merit to it. Since I have no personal experience with it I can only go by what is in the literature. Finally I am always leery of anything that is sold through Multi Level Marketing.
