Lowering your blood pressure Thursday, July 16, 2009
When I graduated medical school, normal blood pressure was 150/90 and normal cholesterol was 250.
My how times have changed. In some people 130 /70 is borderline high and normal cholesterol is now 180.
Now I know what you are thinking: this is a ploy to sell more prescription drugs to an unsuspecting public.
But in point of fact there is some data to show that lower is better to a point any way. The real question becomes just how many side effects are you willing to incur and how much money do you want to give to Big Pharma in the process of treating so called high blood pressure.
I had my own experience with this several years back when some prescription drugs I was taking damaged my kidneys and gave me high blood pressure.
After 5 different prescriptions didn't bring it down to where it needed to be, I cranked up my dose of fish oil and eventually invented my own brand along with Super Omega 3. Since that time I was able to get off all meds for many years and believe me I feel great.
If, however, I stop either for any length of time my pressure starts to creep back up.
My solution: I consider Super Omega 3 and fish oil the equivalent of prescription drugs in my case but without the side effects or dangers.
In a recent study published in the journal "Hypertension" Omega 3 fatty acids as found in fish oil were shown to be effective at lowering blood pressure in "normal" people without medical intervention. While the effect was not enough to cause any problems it covers us for the future when they lower the definition of normal to sell more drugs. Believe me as the power of supplements continues to threaten Big Pharma you can expect exactly this: a lower and lower definition of what needs drug therapy and more and more "conditions" that require drugs to treat them.
If you will look carefully you will often find they are drugs that didn't work well or sell well for their original niche. Like Zyban (repackaged Welbutrin) for smoking or Requip which was a lousy anti-Parkinsonian drug that is now touted for restless legs (hey, try Sleep Wizard in stead).
I think if we all took 6 fish oil a day and nothing else we'd be a whole lot healthier and happier nation and the science bears that out.
Let's not wait for Big Pharma; let's make it happen now!
