Organ specific supplementation Wednesday, July 01, 2009
I get a lot of questions about specific organ systems like the heart, liver detox, colon cleansing and so on, so today I am going to review supplementation from a different viewpoint. In short, what supps are best for what organs.
Here we go: A) Total body: This one is pretty much a no-brainer but in case you missed some stuff in the past 8 years, here it is.
1) Brain: a major component of central nervous system tissues, including nerves, glial cells and vascular components, fish oil has been shown to reduce stroke incidence, help MS and improve personality and mood disorders, migraines and seizures, ADD and ADHD.
2) Thyroid: Fish oil's membrane actions have been found to help process the conversion of inactive T4 to active T3. Improvements in outcomes of throat and upper GI cancers have also been seen.
3) Digestive: auto immune problems like Crohn's, ulcerative colitis and sprue have all gotten better in studies with fish oil.
4) Heart and blood vessels. This is where fish oil gets the most air time. Prevention and improvements in heart disease yield daily positive studies. Heart failure and irregular heart beats have also been improved markedly.
5) Joints: both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis have been treated with positive effects.
6) Cancer: in just about every cancer tested, fish oil has shown benefit. It has also shown benefit in helping people tolerate chemotherapy and radiation. Specific cancers included prostate, breast, lung, lymphoma and leukemia.
7) Cosmetic: hair growth, wrinkle treatment, skin cancers and psoriasis, eczema etc., have all shown benefit.

B) Liver: milk thistle, glutathione and NAC would be the main ones here that have actually been tested in scientific studies.
