There seems to be an unending stream of information about the “right” diet. But in the end run we often wind up knowing less than we started.
Why?
Here are some observational answers gleaned from 20+ years of helping people lose weight.
1) Diets don’t work well for weight loss. Most research is designed to see the effect of a specific diet on weight loss in a controlled environment. The world is uncontrolled and diets will not work without exercises. Those two facts make it tough to design anything meaningful for real people trying to lose weight.
2) Here is this word “control” again. Researchers are always trying to factor out everything but the one thing they are looking at. It works with bugs but not people. People are generally a bit more complex.
Also a lot of them forget that invertebrates (spineless creatures) often have little to do with human biology.
3) Most of the studies are very short term and the long term ones are “observational” or dependent on questionnaires. People are usually inaccurate on there questionnaire answers and observations are fraught with mistakes as well. It’s very hard to get a person or a group of people to live for a year or more in a controlled environment. Any volunteers?

Here it is: calories matter most but they matter more in the lab than they do in the real world. What you eat has a lot to do with how successful you are at losing weight.
