Before we get started with the latest information, a few review items are in order; so here they are:
1) Being overweight or over fat is a big health and mortality risk but it is not the health or the mortality that motivates most people.
True, someone laying on a table after having their chest filleted open to save their heart will generally listen to the following medical advice: lose weight!
But only for a while.
No, my friend, motivation that changes lives only rarely comes from the end-of-life threat. More often it is how one looks or feels.
So my simple stupid summary reason for people to get learner and stronger is: It makes your life easier!
2) The desperation associated with weight loss is monumental. The emotions and frustrations that many people feel are the exact reason they fail at weight and fat loss: they go in expecting to fail.
Now Sigmund Freud I ain’t but I will remind you that a positive patient attitude is likely to succeed here!
3) “Excuses” or reasons why one “cannot” lose weight are comforting for some people and an excuse I hear a lot is “I come from a fat family!”
So just how much does genetics influence your weight and what can you do about it!?
Again, since you are probably reading this at work or in a hurry to get there, here it is in list form.
1) Genetics influence the tendency to weigh a certain amount, where that weight is stored and how easy or hard it will be for you to get rid of it. Notice this has nothing to do with how easy it is to put it on!
2) Genetics also influence the consequences of being overweight. Are you going to wreck your joints, wreck your heart, get diabetes, have high blood pressure or a stroke or even cancer?
3) How much influence to be exact? Well the best guesstimate I ever saw was 27%. That means that 73% of it is up to you and how you live your life.
4) What factors are most important in that remaining 73% that YOU have control over? Nutrition (yes, that includes eating and supplements!) and exercise.
Now here is a very strange, fascinating and in my opinion totally cool phenomenon. the degree to which your genetics influence your body weight (and many of the diseases I mentioned above) can be further modified by the very things that you have control over: nutrition and exercise.
That means, as was recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, you can actually lower the percentage your genes, control your outcome and make it even less of a factor?
How much?
Well, proper diet and exercise give you another 7 to 15% control according to current studies, which pretty much puts you in the captain’s chair as far as being the master of your fate!
For you scientists out there, this means behavioral factors actually influence the expression of genes.
For those of you who are not scientists, let me simply say that is a big WOW for us science types because it is completely different than the “your genes are set in stone and they determine your fate” mentality we’ve been taught and teaching for decades.
Hey, if I live long enough (and I intend to) I think I will see just about everything I learned in med school be proven wrong!
Ok so now that you know you are in control, what do you do?
