I read an article with great interest the other day. As many of you know I have been in firm opposition to the Codex Alimentarius, a legal rape of the supplement industry and other industries that fosters a better globalization for Big Pharma and other major money holding institutions.
For the time being the government has it’s head too far up some other body part to worry about supplements, but the threat is always there as long as money talks louder than common good and common sense.
But there may be another way for Big Pharma to bypass this legislation and get what they have always wanted: control of the free market in nutritional supplements for themselves.
A recent article pretty much proved what a lot of scientists and doctors as well as Pharma types did not want to hear: red yeast rice is very effective at improving cholesterol, both good and bad. More importantly this natural compound, a key ingredient in my Cholesterol Bomb, was shown to improve all cause mortality and cardiac death by 38%.
The first words out of the mouths of traditionalists were: ‘Ok, so this stuff actually works; that means we need to regulate it.’
I am going to do a little historical read through on this for you.
1) Early 1980’s: Merck end runs the Chinese, who do not honor any patents any way, by snagging red yeast rice and identifying the “active ingredient” in the compound. They called it Lovastatin or Mevacor and even though it is an all natural agent they manage to get a “use patent” and ban the importation and use of red yeast rice for cholesterol. They also get a use patent on Co Q10, which would be used to combat the side effects of their new drug, which is needed because they have isolated and amplified one compound of the many bioactive compounds in the yeast (ok, purists, red yeast rice is not really a yeast infected rice -- it is aspergillum -- non-pathogenic. That makes the Mevacor a big deal!).
2) Rival Big Pharma giant, Pfizer, comes out with a semi-synthetic version called Lipitor and many other drug companies follow suit once the precedent has seen set that “the world needs statins”.
3) Fully synthetic versions like Crestor soon follow.
4) Pravachol publishes a study that shows they are pretty much worthless in what they claim to do; reverse damage to arteries. In fact, their study suggests they might make it worse!
5) GISSI prevention, published in 1999, shows fish oil far more effective at preventing heart disease and all cause mortality than statins.
6) Subsequent effects to prove statins are effective at reducing inflammation fail to show enough effects to justify the use of drugs for other uses such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and arthritis.
7) Big Pharma releases Ezitemibe and later combines it with statins. The drug is shown to be basically worthless on its own and potentially harmful with cancer occurring almost 50 % more frequently in one study where the drug did not achieve any meaningful treatment results any way.
8) Spring 2009: The American College of Cardiology reverses its position on fish oil, admitting in statements that it is useful for treating both vascular heart disease and congestive heart failure.
9) Fall 2009: Red yeast rice shows itself to be useful, safe and effective as a cholesterol lowering agent and at saving lives. Once this data is analyzed versus cholesterol lowering statins it will most likely be found that red yeast rice is superior to pharmaceutical preparations and raises HDL good cholesterol and lowers bad cholesterol as well.
10) Traditional medicine (read: brainwashed by Big Pharma) calls for regulation of Red Yeast Rice for the second time stating that it contains a regulated drug already in use, namely Lovastatin a.k.a. Mevacor. I jokingly call this the “second coming of rice”.
If the ‘bass ackwardness’ of this seems typical of Big Pharma and traditional medicine shenanigans, you are correct. It boils down to this. No one likes to give up power and money and Big Pharma has sabotaged themselves and taken traditional well meaning doctors with them in terms of public trust.
