Don’t you just love a great mystery? Even if you’re not a big fan of the genre, there’s a dark itch inside all of us that can’t help but want to see what’s behind that half open door.
What’s that sprawled across the linoleum…?
One of the all time great mystery writers was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His most famous literary creation, Sherlock Holmes, will reincarnate once again this 2009 Holiday Season to confound movie audiences around the globe.
As a movie fan, I wonder how well this new iteration will manage that delicate dance between staying true to Doyle’s original mythology, while keeping the vision fresh and original for today’s audiences.
One can only hope.
We all applaud the intellectual rigor with which Holmes would approach his cases. But as a physician, I personally empathize with ever-loyal Doctor Watson, who would both accompany Holmes and record his exploits with dutiful precision.
Sadly, Watson never seemed to get the credit he deserved.
“Elementary, my dear Watson,” Holmes would pronounce as Watson puzzled over some obscure clue, “you see, but you do not observe.”
Yes, the mysteries of crime and death belonged to Holmes, as well as all the good press.
But may I suggest that Watson had a more solid handle on unlocking the mystery of life than Holmes.
