I have to tell you, I find myself revealing a lot about myself as a person in
these emails to you.
I often wonder if I reveal too much.
Here I ago again! I love animals. Not only do they fascinate me but they
absolutely enrich my life. I am guilty of treating them way too much like human
beings in terms of the time love and "rights" I shower upon them. They are guilty
of being loving, predictable funny and more human in some cases than some people
I know!
That said I know there are several of you out there who feel the same way.
Ironic as it may seem, our pets lives and life spans are mimicking our own. I
other words pets are living longer and getting sicker in their old age, just like
people in our society.
I have had 3 pets in my life so far; a dog and 2 cats. In each case they gave so
much and asked for so little that I would have done anything reasonable to
prolong their health and vitality.
Watching them age, slow down and get sick is very sad. Their loss was felt by me
very deeply indeed.
As it turns out so many of the same things that affect our health affect that of
our pets too.
We feed our pets foods rich in inflammatory Omega 6 fats. Why? Same reason as
in people; they are cheap... Much of the sold "crunchy" dog and cat foods contain
large amounts of plant derived materials because they are cheap.
Both cats and dogs are natural carnivores, meat eaters by nature. Like us their
guts are evolved enough to handle both food stuffs but it is not naturally what
they would seek if left to their own devices.
Dogs as a matter of fact have evolved to eat meat even more so because they have
shorter guts that do not absorb cholesterol as well as people do.
But they still get heart disease, arthritis, senile dementia (Alzheimer's
disease) and lack of energy when they get older.
Fish Oil supplementation of your pet can improve longevity, and heath as the pet
ages.
Some tips on feeding fish oil to cats and dogs. Cats tend to be a lot more
finicky but if you squeeze the contents of 1 capsule of Fish Oil onto their food,
they generally don't bat an eye at it.
Dogs respond well to peanut butter coating and in many cases you can just give
them the capsule coated in peanut butter one to tow times a day. If the pet is
over 45 lbs. give them 2 caps a day. Under, 1 caps daily.
Should it be Pharmaceutical Grade fish Oil?
Well that depends on how much you love your pet!
Cats and dogs are not any better equipped to handle lead and mercury than you and
I are.
What about horses? Sadly this is the one time I have to recommend Flax oil.
Horses are more like cows. The structure of their gut is poorly adapted to
handle long chain essential fatty acids like fish oil. They are essentially
natural vegans.
What kinds of results can you expect to see upon supplementing your pet?
Well once again the results are much like that in people.
Animals that are young may not show a whole lot of benefits that you realize
until they get older and you see how young they act!
Older pets will show improvements in the luster of their coats, less hair loss
and shedding. They may tend to cause fewer allergies because of less dander too.
My cat "Pumpkin" has a definite spring in her step because of the supplementation.
It may be my imagination but she seems less "moody" too!
All I can say is that I do love my pet! It makes me feel good to know that I am
giving her a great chance at living a long and happy life!
Your pet deserves the same!
