I did not choose the above individuals to make a statement about their
contributions to the world or to make any judgments as to their relative value as
human beings.
I do not mean or intend to make any political or social or religious statements
about their beliefs or practices.
I chose them because each is representative of a certain dietary behavior and
each is well known to the general public.
Lately I have gotten quite a few questions about calorie restriction and
longevity. It seems the gurus have been at work again hand in hand with the lay
press. The bottom line : calorie restriction leads to longer life. There are
various names given to the type of diet that is advocated.
My favorite is CRANS, calorie restriction adequate nutrition supplementation. It
goes by other names like Cronies' Phonys and Balonies but who cares!
The gist of this diet is that you reduce your caloric intake to somewhere
between 1000 and 1500 Cal. Per day and you will live longer.
A couple of points:
1) This diet is widely embraced by the medical establishment as THE way to live
longer.A couple of points:
2) This diet has never been studied in human beings!A couple of points:
3) the very same Medical Establishment that demands double blind randomized
placebo controlled double dummy studies ( I've often wondered what a triple dummy
study looks like!) before they'll listen to a word you say does not for some
reason require the same rigorous science on this subject!A couple of points:
4) The large majority of these studies were conducted in yeast cells, E coli, and
fruit flies! Now I'll be the first to admit that all these species have definite
validity and human application ( we are closer to them genetically than you
think!) They are a far cry from primates. There have been a few primate studies
done and they also suggest that calorie restriction leads to longer life.A couple of points:
5) Don't look for a longitudinal ( followed for years ) study of this type in
humans any time soon, I hope. The closest thing to this occurred in the Nazi
Death Camps of World War 2. A generation of Americans sacrificed immeasurably to
make sure that this would not happen again! Obviously those poor souls were
deprived of any nutrition so no data can be extracted form that horror of human
behavior!
The hardest part of this comes from what constitutes "adequate nutrition" and for
whom.
In typical "one size fits all fashion" Western Medicine has tried to fashion a
simple formula to give everyone about how to meet adequate needs. In my opinion
the amounts of protein and calories suggested are suitable for someone who wants
to sit in a rocking chair. Careful not to rock or you might use up some of those
precious calories!
So what happens when you go on this type of diet for "longevity".
Well first, you get thin! Very thin. Next you get weaker than you were before.
Next your energy levels go down. Next your sex drive goes down. Then you get
depressed. Do you live longer this way? Maybe but do you want to?!
No I am not talking about a sensible balanced diet and I am not talking about
being a vegan so if you've got your hackles raised about this and are ready to
launch an email in my direction telling me I am full of El Toro caca stop now
because I am not making a statement about either of those lifestyles.
I am talking about sacrificing calories for the end goal of longevity.
Here is what happens metabolically on that type of calorie restricted diet.
Basically you turn down everything. Your metabolic rate goes down. Your sex
steroid production goes down. Your muscle and overall body cell turnover goes
down. Your thyroid hormone production goes down. Your body temperature goes down.
It's like turning down the furnace in your house, you use less fuel and the
furnace lasts longer.
Remember I've talked about the human organism being like an oxidative furnace.
We burn oxygen and food to create energy. In the process we also create the
byproducts of an oxidative metabolism: free radicals and oxidative damage.
It makes perfect sense to me that if you turn down this whole process you create
less damaging free radicals and get less wear and tear on the machinery of your
body. You also get less use out of it!
Now here is analogy all of you can relate to. Money! I call it the "Millionaire
Next Door" analogy. Those of you who read this book will recall that the premise
was" Spend less and save more and you'll be a millionaire".
Wonderful, if you like to be parsimonious your whole life and sit on top of your
money. To me the way to become a millionaire is to MAKE MORE! Use the talent
and brains you were given and don't let life pass you by!
This is why I take 40 odd vitamin and nutraceutical supplements in a day. I live
hard, I play hard and I know that under normal circumstances I would be burning
out my body before its time. By normal I mean if I did not apply the principles
of better nutrition and supplementation.
You see I want MORE not LESS from my life.
I know that I can negate the extra oxidative damage and free radicals that my
body produces from OPTIMAL living.
Gandhi fasted a lot during his lifetime. Most of you can picture him as very
thin. Because he was tragically taken from us by murder, we will never know
exactly how long he would have lived. I suspect that because of his power of
purpose, he would have lived a long life. I highly recommend reading about Gandhi
if you want to learn the power of focus and determination!
Jack Lalanne clearly does not fast much. He has achieved some amazing things and
lived a very long time with a very well muscled physique. I am certain he eats
well and takes tons of supplements.
Note that both of these men achieved amazing
things in their lives and in their times. But they are at opposite ends of the
spectrum in terms of their respective physiques.
As far as looks go, I have to say I prefer Jack Lalanne! This is why I take all
the supplements I do, and frankly why I designed them. Both of the men I
mentioned above are heroes to me, but Jack is the man I want to be when I am 80!
Now I will let you in on another secret of mine. I am a healer. Even when forced
to be aggressive violent or competitive, compassion is swimming right below the
surface.
