Fish Oil and Cancer, Part 1

The following is a reprint of an email sent out over 2 months ago to a list that has now grown immensely since that time. May of you were not getting my emails at that time so in order to lay the ground work for the next series on Fish Oil and Cancer, I am resending it now. I want to believe you, but it seems that there are always people out there who want to take advantage of other people's suffering. Now let's look at the way that Fish Oil benefits Cancer as a whole. Fish Oil has an effect on an enzyme inside cells called COX-2. This enzyme is responsible for inflammation, for cell proliferation in cancer cells and the growth of new blood vessels to feed that cancer.

If you interrupt the proliferation of cancer and you stop its blood supply you stop it from growing.

Next, there are 2 specific oncogenes called AP-1 and ras that are directly related to the promotion of CANCER. If you shut these down or suppress them, you decrease the likelihood of getting cancer, or if you have it is less likely to spread.

With its effect on specific genes, Fish Oil actually helps Cancer cells become more "differentiated" which in English means closer to regular cells, less aggressive and less deadly.

Promoting Cancer Cell apoptosis. Now what the hell is that? Apoptosis is the normal programmed time that a cell lives. Remember those 70 year old cancer cells in the Petri Dish from yesterday's email? Well they ain't apoptosing!

Interestingly it does not seem to do this to regular cells so it doesn't harm regular healthy cells, unlike Chemotherapy.

Finally Fish oil aids in reducing something called Cachexia. This is a wasting syndrome that occurs in advanced cancer patients. Basically 3 things happen.

1) The cancer itself demands more of the nutrition that the person takes in for itself to support its own growth.

2) Next there are hormonal and chemical mechanisms that cause a person to be less hungry and more likely to be malnourished. Who among us has not seen someone we know waste away with cancer?

3) Fish Oil supplies the essential fatty acids needed for healthy cell function.

All of the above applies to AIDS patients as well.

In several studies, people who were In Intensive care units were given supplemental Fish oil. No matter what the problem they were in for, they did better than people who were not supplemented!

I want to quote one of the articles on the subject .

"It seems reasonable that after appropriate cancer therapy, consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids might slow or even stop the growth of metastatic cancer cells, increase longevity of cancer patients, and improve their quality of life" J Nutr. 2002 Nov;132 (11 suppl) 3508S-3512S.

I could not have said it better! Please help me spread the word to anyone who needs this help! If there is any cancer in your family and you are not taking my fish oil in my opinion, you are playing Russian Roulette with your future!
