FDA Wimps Out on Arthritis DrugsDear Friend,Ok I am not going to pull any punches. The FDA are a bunch of wimps in my opinion. They had to have an "expert panel" look at the data from the so called Cox-2 inhibitors Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra. In the end the expert panel does not have the final say. The final say comes from the FDA itself and is due in the next 2 weeks. Questions for the FDA. Why aren't you the experts?!!! You are the organization that is paid to police drug safety; can't you make the decision without hiring a bunch of other people? Next. You already have the data why do you need to 'reexamine it"? These drugs pose unnecessary risk and should be yanked. Period! If the job had been done right in the first place there would be no issue. We wouldn't want to offend Big Pharmacy now would we? Clearly you, the FDA are not experts at anything but protecting the interests of Big Pharmacy. If you were worried about the impact on the stock market surely stopping these drugs from being launched would not be as bad as having to pull them. More fun stuff. The expert panel decided to recommend that Vioxx be allowed to be sold for special cases especially Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Is Vioxx that much more effective than all the others (Celebrex and Bextra) including the old style Motrin and Naprosyn that it deserves to continue to be on the market? Again clear answer: NO! Or is it just that you don't want Merck to sink and that kids are unlikely to have heart disease to begin with so why worry? Next all the drugs are recommended for short term use now instead of long term use. Why bother! Arthritis isn't just going to disappear. Find something that works and use it and keep the patient on it. Find something that is safe. Instead of recommending things Like pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil, what do they want you the patient to take? "Oh just go back to the old drugs, Motrin Indocin etc." You know all the drugs that can also cause heart attacks kidney and liver failure, and bleeding ulcers to boot. AS a matter of fact let's all go back to aspirin or willow bark tea since nothing "created" yet has ever been shown to be more effective at relieving pain. Now here is my favorite. There exists a society out there called the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology or the ISPE for short. This society exists to promote the epidemiologic research. In English these are trends in a large segment of the population. Think epidemic and you'll know what I mean. Their comment on this whole mess is that Drug companies should not be required to report all potential adverse reactions because this would be " counterproductive, and overwhelm existing surveillance systems". Nice! Ok guys let's just keep doing what we've been doing and let people die! What do they want? You guessed it more money for their research so they can sit back and watch as stuff happens and then, and only then decide what is an important trend. Another bureaucracy, just like the FDA whose real purpose eventually becomes to keep itself alive even when it serves little or no purpose22! Here's my suggestion folks. But a large segment of the population with arthritis on my fish oil and follow their outcomes for a few years. While you are at it, put some of the children of these people on it too since they may be at higher risk of getting arthritis as well. Follow them and see what happens.
