Beware of False Prophets or Sugar Coated Pond ScumDear Friend,Over the past couple of weeks I have gotten scattered emails about various other products beside fish oil that contain Omega 3 fatty acids. These have included Algae, Krill products and coconut oil. Now again I don't use other people's products and it is weak positioning to badmouth stuff so I will try to be as objective as possible. So I decided to surf a little and find out some more about the stuff. First off coconut oil. The biggest site I found blasting all the benefits of coconut oil was really fun. Some lady who reminded me of my mom's hairdresser was surrounded by graphics of sea surf and palm trees. I immediately went into a blissful tropically induced state when I read about all the health giving benefits of coconut oil. I also saw another highly respected Alternative Health Guru who no doubt influences millions also touted its benefits quoting first hand accounts, but no real science. He just happens to sell it too, along with just about everything else! So I went to the National Library of Health data base and I found that there were no articles supporting the claims, and in fact some suggesting that coconut oil was potentially hazardous since it contains saturated fats and may increase inflammation. Again, we also run into the plant vs. animal fat issue. Plants Omega 3 fats are poorly bioavailable for humans which is conveniently left out of most sites praising their benefits to high heavens.
Next Krill. Krill is basically whale food, a kind of crustacean that is harvested for Omega 3's. It is touted as being better than fish oil in 1 or 2 studies. Problem. Once again the people formulating it do not understand human biochemistry. Right now people's diets are so far skewed to Omega 6 fats and away from Omega 3's that the so called "balanced fatty acid approach" is simply put; unbalanced. Omega 9's are not essential and can be synthesized by the body thus no reason to put them in either. Next problem. I smell a rotten fish! The articles comparing krill to fish oil (there are only 2) use a specific brand of Krill and a nonspecific brand of food grade (not pharmaceutical grade) Fish Oil. They are also in the same journal. Could they perhaps be sponsored by the manufacturer in order to make their product look better than it really is!!? Me thinks so! Finally algae. In the ever expanding quest to make money off the back of a proven product, people are always looking for an alternate source to Mother Natures Best, fish Oil! Algae do contain an Omega 3 fatty acid but only one, EPA. There is no DHA in this product. Now there are arguments that the body can convert EPA to DHA, but it is still considered an essential fatty acid and no one knows what the conversion rate is. Here is the final point. None of these products has any significant amount of documentation to prove their claims. Fish Oil has and continues to be studied in every major disease state usually showing good results. It is the only supplement that the American heart Association and the American Cancer society recommend at all. And there are literally THOUSANDS of citations in every major medical data base documenting its benefits. Not so with Krill, Algae, or coconut oil (see below). However there is a bright side to all this! The fact that people are trying to piggy back along with my Fish Oil means that we are making a difference. People are starting to notice and push Omega 3's even if they are the wrong ones! This is a big step in the right direction. Finally one of my customers notified me that Kellogg's tm the giant cereal manufacturer is considering including algae derived Omega 3 in its cereal products. No doubt they are looking for a cheap way to claim health benefits for their products. I can just see it now a new cereal called "Sugar Coated Pond Scum!" If you have a few minutes check out the references below on theses so called new sources omega 3's. They are very interesting! It had far less protective effect on heart disease than Fish Oil! More heart damage was done in the subjects taking coconut oil. Yet some respected Alternative Health gurus tout it and sell it for its so called benefits. Omega 3 PUFA are fish oils containing both EPA and DHA! Since when was heart attack a benefit? J Nutr Biochem. 1999 Jun;10(6):338-44. Related Articles, Links Effect of saturated, omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids on myocardial infarction. Nageswari K, Banerjee R, Menon VP. School of Biomedical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India. Dietary fatty acids have cholesterol lowering, antiatherogenic, and antiarrhythmic properties that decrease the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). This study was designed to study the effects of various oils rich in either polyunsaturated (omega-3 or omega-6) fatty acids (PUFA) or saturated fatty acids (SFA) on the severity of experimentally induced MI. Male albino Sprague-Dawley rats (100-150 g; n = 20) were fed diets enriched with fish oil (omega-3 PUFA), peanut oil (omega-6 PUFA), or coconut oil (SFA) for 60 days. Experimental MI was induced with isoproterenol. Mortality rates; serum enzymes aspartate amino transferase; alanine amino transferase; creatine phosphokinase (CPK); lipid profiles in serum, myocardium, and aorta; peroxide levels in heart and aorta; activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase; and levels of glutathione were measured. The results demonstrated that mortality rate, CPK levels, myocardial lipid peroxides, and glutathione levels were decreased in the omega-3 PUFA treated group. Maximum increase in parameters indicative of myocardial damage was seen in the coconut oil group. These findings suggest that dietary omega-3 PUFA offers maximum protection in experimentally induced MI in comparison to omega-6 PUFA and SFA enriched diets. SFA was found to have the least protective effect. IN the article below there was clear evidence that coconut oil derived product increased cancer inflammation and other adverse events.. Yet some Gurus state it protects form cancer. You decide! Natl Toxicol Program Tech Rep Ser. 2001 Jan;479:5-226. Related Articles, Links Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of coconut oil acid diethanolamine condensate (CAS No. 68603-42-9) in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice (dermal studies). There was clear evidence of carcinogenic activity in male B6C3F1 mice based on increased incidences of hepatic and renal tubule neoplasms and in female B6C3F1 mice based on increased incidences of hepatic neoplasms. These increases were associated with the concentration of free diethanolamine present as a contaminant in the diethanolamine condensate. Exposure of rats to coconut oil acid diethanolamine condensate by dermal application in ethanol for 2 years resulted in epidermal hyperplasia, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, and parakeratosis in males and females and ulcer in females at the site of application. There were increases in the incidences of chronic inflammation, epithelial hyperplasia, and epithelial ulcer in the forestomach of female rats. The severities of nephropathy in dosed female rats were increased. Exposure of mice to coconut oil acid diethanolamine condensate by dermal application for 2 years resulted in increased incidences of eosinophilic foci of the liver in males. Increased incidences of epidermal hyperplasia, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, and hyperkeratosis in males and females, ulcer in males, and parakeratosis and inflammation in females at the site of application and of follicular cell hyperplasia in the thyroid gland of males and females were chemical related. Department of Pathology, Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. In comparison to the HCO group, the EPO group showed raised levels of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) and suppressed n-3 fatty acids. The FO group, on the other hand, showed suppressed levels of n-6 and increased n-3 fatty acids. Hepatocarcinogenesis suppressed the level of 20:4n-6 and this effect was greater in the FO rats. (FO =fish Oil) Below once again coconut oil caused harmful effects, including growth retardation. 1: J Nutr. 1984 Feb;114(2):255-62. Rats were fed a diet poor (0.05%) in essential fatty acids (EFA) with H coconut oil as fat component, or a control diet containing 4% of the total energy intake in the form of linoleic acid. Effects of dietary EFA deficiency were investigated during a period of 2-30 weeks. Growth retardation becomes significant after 4 weeks of deficiency and attains about 25% when the deficiency is maintained for longer than 12 weeks.
