Sweets you can eatDear Friend,My "Phantom Menace" email raised a lot of questions about what is healthy to eat that is sweet. Apparently I am not the only one who gets DQ Blizzard attacks. Well here are a couple of guilty pleasures that will not make you feel too guilty. Now again I don't grab for these on a regular basis as it's basically part of my job description to eat healthy but, in a real pinch these will do and often keep you out of the sweets aisle at your grocery store or the drive-thru at your local dairy bar. Dark chocolate or a dark chocolate Dove Ice cream bar. Dark chocolate at least has some good anti-oxidants in it and Dove makes a "Promise" bar that is low fat and low calorie. It tastes good too and may be just the thing when you are trying to be virtuous but are losing the battle. Fruit with Stevia or dare I say it, NutraSweet. One of the few times I might splurge on some NutraSweet is when I eat blueberries. Normally I love the taste by itself but when the old sweet tooth calls well sometimes a pack of Splenda or NS just gives it the burst I need to stop from straying. Sugar free Jell-O with low fat or nonfat dessert topping. Well you have to be up fro a chemical fest for this one but it is sweet and low calorie. Hot or cold fat free cocoa or iced tea. Swiss Miss makes one that is even fortified with calcium and other minerals. Anti-oxidants plus minerals not bad for a sugar fix with only a little sugar. Applesauce. My all time favorite. If you can make it yourself it's even better. I have a Vita mix so in goes the cored apples, skins and all along with some cinnamon and out comes warm wonderful applesauce. Now the Vita mix is basically an 8 horsepower blender and it ain't cheap but making your own applesauce or fresh peanut butter is tough to beat. Finally remember when you do fall of the wagon and splurge there is hope. A large dose of fish Oil will slow down the absorption of all that sugar and blunt the bad hormonal effects of junk food rather nicely.
