Dying to Wake Up? - Part 1

Have you ever had a day when you just plain overreacted to something?

Here is an extreme story of what stress can do told to me several years ago by a friend Billy H.

Billy's Dad was up in years and probably should not have been driving.

His reflexes were slow and his judgment not always the best. Still everyone figured what the heck, let him drive to the store and back. After all it's only local and if you take the car away, he will be crushed by his lack of independence and waste away.

Let me tell you, as a doctor there were few things harder than taking away someone's license that you had known for years. But it had to be done.

One day Billy's dad was driving home from the store on the one small stretch of highway that had to be navigated to get him home.

No one was 100% sure of the details but it seems that Billy's dad might have cut someone off or done something similarly inappropriate.

In this case the driver, a young male forced Billy's dad off the road and started screaming at him threatening him with a tire iron or some such and pounding on his car with his fists.

While no actual physical blows were struck Billy's dad was shaken to the core. He wasn't even sure what he had done wrong and here was this young strong angry man threatening him.

Billy's dad made it home but as he got out the car his wife saw him clutching his chest.

He died 1 day later in the hospital, the results of a massive heart attack.

Now one could make the argument tht all of this could have been prevented in many ways and at many steps along the way and I agree.

Many of you also already know that heart disease is often not the result of some sudden event, but rather a lifetime of accumulated vascular injury due to inflammation.

Those of you who have been with me for a while could probably recite in your sleep the ways in which Fish Oil prevents both clogged blood vessels and inflammation that causes them.

But there are some more interesting facts that the sad case of Billy's dad illustrates.

How you respond and behave has a lot to do with the Omega 3 Fish Oil levels in your body.

We now know that stress or more importantly, the way that people respond to it often plays a major role in the actual event of heart attack and stroke.

But wait a minute, you might say. Don't most heart attacks and strokes happen when people are just getting out of bed in the morning or right before?

Ye, that's true but it's because we are naturally programmed to have all our stress hormones spike at that hour.

Add to that the loud traumatic buzzing of the alarm clock and you have the biochemical equivalent of a time bomb going off!

Hopefully you get my point.

In the next email, part 2 I will give you the exact hormonal mechanisms and what you can do to make sure they don't get out of hand.
