Dear Friend,

Lessons from Biochem 101

Before I begin let me wish you a great and happy day and thank you personally for being part of my life!!

By now most of you hopefully know I am a positive person.

An optimist by nature, like my father before me I prefer to see the good in my fellow man and woman, and hopefully help bring that out.

Whilst reading one of the recent combat sports magazines I came across a featured article about a supplement company that catered to fighters, and has done so for several years now.

Naturally I read with earnest. I was a bit disappointed when I read about some of the formulations. Nothing new, same old “me too” stuff you can get in any local health food store, just with different names.

OK so they weren’t making their own stuff just buying it off the shelf and slapping their own label on it.

It happens. As a matter of fact it happens about 90% of the time!

Another example; Dr so and so the guru of male virility announces his stud building supplement.

What’s in it? Tribulis. Oh please! That’s original and cutting edge. NOT!

Well so it is in the business, but back to our Fighter’s supplements.

When I read on I found the company was being handed off.

You see the biochemist who conjured up all these non original supplements was going off to do something that would help humanity. But his company was in good hands with his partner who really knew his stuff.

That is when I came across one of the most basic biochemistry errors that get made by beginners over and over again.

I will admit that terminology can be confusing and I really wouldn’t expect the average person to know or care, but when you claim to be an expert with a biochem background, it’s inexcusable.

When it came to fatty acid supplements, these people were talking about Gamma Lino LE ic acid and Conjugated Lino LEN ic acids.

Sorry whiz kids you have it bass ackwards.

The correct terminology is Gamma Lino LEN ic acids and Conjugated Lino LE ic acids.

Like I said most people wouldn’t care, but if you are selling supplements, you should at least know what you are talking about.

First I thought “OK this must be a typo.”

So I contacted the editor and mentioned this to him. I said, “Is this a typo, or do these guys really not have a clue?!”

The answer, NO Typo, NO Clue!!!

While I have bludgeoned CLA’s to death in the past let me briefly recap.

They are no longer used by informed dieters or body builders to cut weight and reduce body fat. They have been replaced by Fish Oil.

CLA’s are primarily and Omega 6 fat and therefore can contribute to the already off balanced Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratios.

Any health benefits they have come from the small amount of Omega 3 properties they have.

What about Gamma Lino LEN ic acid? Also know as GLA.

GLA is an intermediate in the pathways of essential fatty acids.

Remember that EPA and DHA (fish oil) are the endpoints of fatty acid metabolism. They favor an anti-inflammatory disease suppressing state in the body.

GLA is an Omega 6 fat, but by a twist of the fat metabolism, it can be converted to end products that fight inflammation. Sort of.

This appears to be a short term (read SHORT term) benefit however because it needs to be converted to “human form” much like flax seed oil. Over a period of time it loses its anti-inflammatory tendencies and starts to build up inflammatory chemicals in the body.

This is related to its conversion requirements from an 18 carbon plant fatty acid to a 20 carbon animal fatty acid.

Just like flax seed oil, it is a plant derived oil that must be elongated and even more must be done to change it into a useful form for people.

While this does happen, like flax seed, the conversion is inefficient.

As with flax oil, there are a couple of studies that suggest it may have some benefit in treating human disease, but no where near the thousands of studies on Fish Oil.

Bottom line: Pass it by.

Now how about an easy way to remember those pesky and confusing fatty acids for you budding biochemists out there,

And while I am at it this will be the first time the guys selling supplements to fighters can get it straight.

Here it is: Bad = leic as in Frito Lay tm corn chips! ( sorry fritos!)

“Good” =lenic.

That’s how I remember.

More importantly, EPA and DHA (fish oil) are so much better for you as proven by thousands of studies. That’s really all you have to remember.

I hope the biochem whiz kids from the magazine are reading this!

One other thing. There is absolutely no scientific reason to switch to cod liver oil instead of salmon oil (my stuff!) whatever the season.

Another whiz kid committed the first crime of marketing: “Don’t have 2 products that compete against each other”, and is trying to sell both of them at different times of the year to make up for it.

Dumb and Dumber!!! Don’t be hoodwinked!!!
