What Most doctors THINK of Me And My Fish Oil!!! ...Or How to Develop Thick scales!
Dear Friend,
' Dr ' Dave and I use that term loosely. A patient of mine with cancer brought in your emails about fish oil in breast and other cancers. Nothing disgusts me more than someone who takes advantage of sick patients by trying to sell them overpriced garbage. Don't you have a conscience? You should go to Tijuana to practice.
Aren't you embarrassed to cavort around in front of people spouting this nonsense. Do you have any idea what your colleagues are saying much less thinking about you?
I had to check to see if you were a real doctor. I have to admit I was surprised to find out you were a Board Certified Internist from a reputable Medical School.
If it was up to me I'd have you banned from the practice of medicine and revoke your board certified status. You have violated every sacred tenant your mentors have taught you. They must be horrified and embarrassed.
I told my patient that you were a charlatan, just another internet huckster who can't make it in clinical practice like the rest of us.
While your references do check out you make fish oil sound as if it's good for everything and that if people don't take it they can't be healthy! I am going to report you to your state medical board! S.Chu F.A.C.P. and Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Los Angeles Ca
Well, I have to admit this type of email would bother me, if I hadn't been facing this type of criticism for several years now. None of this is new for me. I have been called on the carpet so many times by so many people.
Funny thing though. In spite of all the threats and malice, no one can really prove me wrong when I present my case.
A close colleague I considered a friend asked me repeatedly if there was something wrong in my life and 'had I lost my marbles?'.
A prospective partner declined to join our group because she didn't like the 'style' of medicine I practiced. The other docs in my group were fine with her, just not me. When I pressed the issue and asked what she meant by style her reply was, 'You know that Alternative nonsense...the stuff where you can say anything you want and don't have to back it up!'
The local Medieval (Medical!) Society wanted me to come before them and explain the content of my website.
And of course at least once a week there is an email like the one above from someone who feels I need to be reigned in, disbarred and dismembered.
Oh well! I am pretty well past that because I believe firmly in what I am doing, and I have the research to back it up.
On one of my sojourns in front if the numerous Medical Authorities I came equipped with over 500 references backing up every claim I made with research from reputable sites and journals.
The response of the individual who was my inquisitor was,' Oh I am sure you believe what you are saying, but nobody else does!' I plunked down the references and offered to leave them there for as long as it took for him to examine them. He declined.
They always do...decline. These are the same people that spout references or at least journals as the sum total proof that the way we are practicing medicine now is the ONLY WAY TO DO IT.
On the flip side I've had vegans tell me, ' No matter what you say about how great Fish Oil is, I am not going to take it!' OK by me.
And my personal favorite,' I am a nutritionist and I resent the implication that you need to take capsules and pills to get your fish oil. Why even your precious American Heart Association only recommends 2 fatty fish meals a week for preventing heart disease!'
That's because even they know that there is a link between mercury toxicity and fish consumption. They also say pregnant women should avoid these types of fish because of the mercury . In spite of all the evidence to show that fish oil improves outcomes in pregnancy ( my recent Bigger Healthier Babies series).
Of course they won't come out and say Pharmaceutical Grade fish Oil is the perfect answer to both of those problems. Maybe that would be to close to an unpaid product endorsement by them!

There is increasing concern regarding methylmercury exposure in populations that consume large amounts of fish. This situation poses a dilemma for those who choose to consume fish for its beneficial effects on heart disease risk. Recent evidence suggests that high mercury content in fish may diminish the cardioprotective effect of fish intake. We explore the current knowledge of Hg toxicity on the heart and evaluate the epidemiologic evidence to date.
So I learned that this is a no win game. There are a huge number of people who have a vested interest in believing that Traditional Medicine of which I am a 'bastard step son' of holds the keys to the future health of our population.
I disagree and I stake my reputation on what I believe every day against a huge majority of doctors, legislators and scientists. And I ask you are you satisfied in total with the medical care you have access to?
For some reason the very same research that supports the use of prescription drugs is not good enough when it comes to supplements.
I have been cautioned not to include articles or abstracts in these newsletters because no one reads them and they turn people off
So this reference is for Dr S. Chu who wrote me that nice email. It is a long list of the conditions in which fish oil (omega 3 fatty acids )

OBJECTIVE: To review the relation between dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty
acids (omega-3 PUFA, fish oils) and non-communicable diseases. METHOD: Data were collected
from scientific journals and conference publications, MEDLINE (1979 - 2002) and
current content which included 68 prospective, cross-sectional, case control and
dietary-intervention studies. Scientific paper selections were based on the
association between omega-3 PUFA and non-communicable diseases. RESULTS: omega-3
PUFA has beneficial effects on increasing heart rate variability, decreasing the
risk of stroke, reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, insulin
resistance and glucose metabolism. Long chain omega-3 PUFA (fish oil) has anti-cancer and
anti-inflammatory activities. omega-3 PUFA has also been reported to have a
beneficial effect on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia,
and may be effective in managing depression in adults. CONCLUSIONS: Results from
epidemiological and dietary intervention studies have shown that omega-3 PUFA fish oil
represent powerfully a class of bioactive compounds and that dietary intake of
omega-3 PUFA plays a critical role in human health in relation to
non-communicable diseases.
Fortunately Dr Chu's countrymen are not as closed minded as he is. I would venture to say that he did not bother to read this article either.
By the way his patient continues to order my products!
