Final scary factsDear Friend,"Final scary facts" With low carb diets all the rage its time for us to examine a few more things that come up as common questions. 1) "Dr Dave which is worse for you, a can of regular soda, a big serving of pasta a sweet potato or a breakfast bar?" Well let's start by which food is the best for you. The sweet potatoes by far. There is a significant amount of carbs in the sweet potato but they are considered "Medium glycemic" because there is also a fair amount of fiber in them which slows down the absorption of the sugar. Next in terms of healthfulness is the pasta. You can get whole wheat, oat and quinoa all of which have some fiber which again slows down the release of sugar from the refined grains. That being said most pasta sold today is made from refined white pasta flour which will crank up your blood sugar pretty fast. You can add anti pasta and more meatballs to counteract this effect. See the Italians knew what they were doing. By the way those of you who have been to Italy understand that "Italian" food in America is not very Italian! Getting into the lower half of healthiness, the "breakfast bar" arrives. The whole concept pf a breakfast bar or as one of the fast food chains markets, a "breakfast sandwich" seems pretty ridiculous to me. How are you going to get all the food groups into one serving of anything? You definitely want to take my Monster multi if you eat this kind of food! A it stands these are primarily carbs sometimes 60+ grams (can you say Cliff tm bar?)and often sweetened with highly refined corn syrups and other sugars. At least there is some fiber to slow down the absorption.
Well in last place we have sugared soda. One 12 ounce can is like gobbling up a cup of pure sugar. NO fiber no food value. There is even a consumer committee who has undertaken the task of trying to get the Government to label soda as health hazard which of course it is. I think this will go the way of Prohibition.
