Diet questions answeredDear Friend,"Diet questions answered" The past weeks emails have stimulated some diet questions that have come up at other times form time to time so its time for me to give you the answers. Question 1: "Dr Dave, is chromium an effective supplement for weight loss?" NO it is not, and that has been proven over and over again. Despite that fact, people continue to market it for that purpose and I suppose make sales on that premise. Where did this myth get started? There were a few small studies that showed it may benefit diabetics in terms of insulin secretion and blood sugar control but even those were not definitive. Still that did not stop vitamin companies from marketing it for weight loss. Somehow the connection between blood sugar control and weight loss got distorted and chromium was all the rage for a while. Chromium is however essential for the production and secretion of insulin in all people, diabetic or not. Question 2: "Doc is it true that eating later at night makes you gain weight more easily?" Probably not. While eating a lot of calories while you are slowing down for the day (later at night for most of us) is not the greatest idea because you may get blood sugar spikes that are less well controlled than when you are active, the amount of calories you consume in a short period of time has far less to do with weight control than the amount of calories you consume throughout the day versus how many you burn. Getting rid of night time snacks may reduce your entire calorie intake for the day and thus may be a good idea.
Question 3 "Doc some of the "Low fat" foods I buy at the store are high in sodium or high in sugar, is this a problem?" It sure can be. The food industry is not dumb. They know that people respond in the main to 3 types of tastes, textures; sweet, fatty or salty. For years they have cheaply and effectively (from a sales point of view) followed whatever diet trend was in vogue by altering sugar, fat and salt contents. There has been some question as to the role of salt in high blood pressure lately but at least 50% of people are susceptible to salt overload with their blood pressures, even if they have normal blood pressure to begin with. Certain frozen dinners especially are loaded with salt to make up for the lack of fat. Now that low fat is out and high fat low carb is in, the food industry has created different artificial sweeteners so you can have your cake and eat it too.
