In it I detailed my fears that Vioxx, Merck's billion dollar arthritis and pain killing drug was only the first to fall from side effects! It was clear that Pfizer, the other drug Giant involved here, whose drugs reps have been running around happily giving Merck the Last Rites might be in for some scrutiny too. Let's look at some interesting facts. The FDA (food and Drug Administration) whose job it is to protect us from bad drugs missed the boat on Vioxx completely, or so they would have us believe. Merck actually "voluntarily" withdrew Vioxx from the market after it was found that it literally doubled the rate of heart attack and stroke. Voluntarily?!! Or perhaps the FDA gave them a Richard Nixon type situation to save face! Leave or else face far worse!!!! I have to wonder how many folks working fro the FDA got Grant money from Merck or Pfizer for that matter! So who is blowing the horn that Pfizer's drugs Bextra and Celebrex (2.5 billion in sales last year!) might not be any safer, and need to be looked at closely? A fellow by the name of Fitzgerald who was Merck' s lead researcher in a study that showed that Vioxx was indeed safer than standard arthritis drugs from the standpoint of causing ulcers. Trouble was that this same study was the first to hint that Vioxx may cause heart attacks and strokes. Now here is ol' Fitz whining about Pfizer's' drugs!! Never mind he could have saved Merck and perhaps millions of people problems! At least he knows who pays his bills! Several European regulators are also asking that Celebrex be looked at much more closely. Pfizer's own big gun Doc Gail Cawkwell assures us that her drugs are beyond reproach. At 2.5 billion they should be!! But enormous sales didn't save Vioxx. Next throwing his hat in the ring is one Dr Eric Topol from the prestigious Cleveland Clinic.
Eric is pissed that the FDA let Vioxx and Merck go for so long, virtually running amok with marketing campaigns and huge sale all while evidence mounted suggesting the drug was not safe! Oh, I am surprised Eric! So you have the European regulators vs. the FDA, Merck vs. Pfizer. The FDA vs. the Cleveland Clinic, and Cawkwell vs. Fitzgerald. All the while you have the lawyers circling around the thing like the rotting carcass it is waiting to take a bite out of the most assuredly record breaking settlements that are sure to follow. Much more fun and interesting that Bush vs., Kerry! I must say I am a bit surprised that while the President and his Challenger each pointed the finger at each other with regards to the Flu shot fiasco, they some how missed this one! Meanwhile Fish Oil sales have skyrocketed as people remember that Mother Nature put a potent anti-inflammatory agent with almost no side effects on this Earth for us to use. Who else wants to avoid stomach ulcers, damaged livers, ruined kidneys and heart attacks and strokes!
