Mr. Furey needs no introduction to most of you. When I think of athlete, I think of World Champion. When I think of World Champion, I think of Matt Furey.

We can not all be World Champions but, we can all be athletes in our chosen areas.

1) Decrease in lactic acid production. Lactic Acid is a by product of muscle use. The harder you use the muscle over a shorter period of time, the faster you generate Lactic acid. Lactic acid is actually a healthy thing from the standpoint of survival. The body likes to be in homeostasis (roughly translated it means staying the same). The use of energy in the cells generates free acid (charged hydrogen molecules). The lactic molecule picks up these free hydrogen's and prevents them from raising the amount of acid in the muscle which could destroy the tissue or kill the subject!

It also prevents the muscle from using oxygen efficiently. At that point (the lactate threshold) the organism shifts over to metabolism without oxygen which it can only sustain for a minute or so. Once all of that energy is gone you stop dead in your tracks! While you cannot go any further, your body clears that lactate and you eventually can recover and go on.

Better than melting from the inside out of too much acid!!! In long distance running and other Endurance sports the point at which you can no longer go on is called "The Wall"!

Back in 1998 I was running a marathon. My goal was o break 3hours and 30 min. This is not fast by runner standards, but I weighed 220lbs.

Somewhere out there there is a record of sorts that says, no one over 200 lbs has ever broken 3 hours in a Marathon.

I figured if I could break 3:30 at 220 I might drop some weight and try for the 3 hour record.

I had done some very specialized training that year and had run a 10K (6.2 miles) in just over 40 minutes, and an 18 mile race in 2 hours and 7 minutes.

Both times got me trophies in the over 40 category.

I was certain I could easily nail 3:30 for the marathon.

Things went well until around 7 miles.

There I met and ran with a 17 year old track kid who was in his first marathon.

Well we hit it off. I played the role of father figure telling story after story to this young inexperienced kid to help the miles go by.

Trouble was I was such a good motivator about the glory of running that we both steadily increased the pace.

I had trained to run exactly the pace I needed to finish in 3:30 which was about 8 minutes a mile.

Not very fast but an achievement over that distance at least or me.

I should have known I was in trouble when around mile 13 the kid looked at me and said, "We're Flying!"

That ole'demon Runners High had caught me in its grip and wouldn't let me go.

I thought, "Hey go with it! Maybe you are in a lot better shape than you think!"

This thought flew directly in the face of all of my experience with previous races, especially Marathons!

Somewhere around mile 17 I knew I was in trouble and wouldn't be able to keep going at this pace.

Slowly inexorably I began to slow down.

The kid, bless him started to wait for me.

I had to tell him, "You are doing great, keep going! Don't wait for me!

I hit the 20 mile mark at 2 hours and 30 minutes, way ahead of schedule.

Mentally I was psyched but then came the Wall.

Crash, burn I was done!

I literally could barely walk!

Now imagine this for a moment. You just ran the race of your life. If it stopped right here you would be in the top 10 of your age range for a national race.

There is only 6 miles to go, a distance you have run numerous times and one that is frankly a short easy run on any given day!

But you can hardly put one foot in front of another. Your mind tells you this cannot be.

You have trained for this. You are in the home stretch! You cannot quit now!

Boy could I have used Instant Endurance at that moment!!!
