Fish Oil and Breast Cancer Part 2Dear Friend,Please understand that yesterday's email was a sad and tragic reminder of a patient that couldn't be helped. It was not meant to bring bad memories to anyone who has lost a loved one to breast cancer. Today we are going to examine the evidence that Fish oil can help prevent and treat Breast cancer. I am going to start with a high risk group of people who have the genetics to get breast cancer. There exists in the human genome mutations or changes in genes that seem to predispose people to breast cancer called BRAC-1 And BRAC-2. While they are estimated at causing only 8% of the breast cancers in this country, they confer a very high risk of breast cancer relative to the "normal" populations where they are not mutated. In Breast cancer cell lines that have these mutations, fish Oil has been shown to decrease the proteins that they code for, and reduce the amount of tumor growth. Same thing in animal studies. Human studies of this type obviously can't be done because no one is going to volunteer to get breast cancer to see if Fish Oil cures them! As you'll see later, there are some interventional trials where women and men who already had breast cancer showed marked benefits to fish oil treatment. Additionally it is clear that Fish Oil prevents the "Cachexia" or cancer wasting of muscle that occurs in these patients. It should not be a surprise that Omega 6 plant fatty acids actually promote the growth of breast cancer, increase DNA (genetic material) damage due to free radicals (super high energy oxygen molecules that distort and destroy vital functions in the cell) and increase the amount of bad estrogen (estrone) in the female body.
