The Benedict Arnold of MedicineDear Friend,"Have You Lost your mind?!!!!" I sat across the large oak table facing a man who had been my boss for several years in the Department of Medicine. How dare I speak up, cause a furor and take a non traditional stand. Was I irrational? My response was to plunk down a much larger wad of papers. Papers I knew my nay sayers would have to accept. Scientific papers done in labs across the nation and across the world by respected scientists. 503 of them to be exact. As I left I smiled and said," Feel free to keep them as long as you like, but do give them back. I only have 1 copy of some of them!" That met with a cold stare and a not so polite decline to read the facts. I had them and they knew it. There is a lot more to the story but suffice it to say it did not end there. Here is a recent letter from the same person, now retired. Dear Dave, It is with great sadness that I write you this letter. By this time I had hoped you would return to the fold. I thought we could impress on you the error of your ways. What happened to you? You were one of our best and brightest. You were a great teacher and the residents loved you. I don't understand how you could stray so far afield. You were always so reasonable and rational. You implicate the FDA and traditional medicine all kinds of cover ups. You produce reams of research to back up your wild claims about fish oil and your other supplements. Supplements that contain things that no one here has ever even heard of! I am especialy sad because I had a hand in your training and I thought we did a good job with you. Now I see that there is no saving you from yourself. Here is my response: Dear D, First off do not feel badly for me, or for the training you have given me. I have saved many lives and helped thousands of people. In addition you and people like you fostered my ability to think for myself. Something I suppose that is always dangerous to any bureaucracy. Ironically in the position I am in now I reach and teach many times the number of the few thousand people in my practice. In a lot of ways I help more people now than ever before. If I die tomorrow no one can take away the good I have done. No one can take away the real and sincere thanks so many have given me. So I'd say I have been blessed and have done a lot in the time I have been given. I must also tell you that I have never felt like I was doing something more important than what I am doing now. All of us know that traditional medicine is failing. The recent debacle with the FDA should have made a believer out of even you. To me this is like the Watergate of Medicine. It must be perused to a logical and satisfactory end. Heads need to roll and the combination of Big Pharmacy and Big Government need to be reminded who they serve. It is ironic that you should invoke the name of Benedict Arnold since he served the crown (the FDA and Big Pharmacy). I am doing exactly the opposite. "Self Care not Health Care" is our Battle Cry D.
