Does DHEA Cause Cancer?

Dear Dr Dave, I noticed you include DHEA in Regenerizer. I heard this causes cancer! Is your compound safe?

DHEA is still a very controversial compound in spite of the fact that it has been on the market and sold over the counter for over 25 years.

Every now and then there is an article released in the lay press that states that there may be some danger in taking it. Often there are questions about its ability to cause cancer.

In point of fact there is absolutely no solid data to support that DHEA causes Cancer. PERIOD.

Nonetheless I think we will continue to see questions raised over and over again by the news media that is continuously trying to generate" news" where there is none, I included DHEA in Regenerizer because it fits the concept of this compound: to be the best energy generation compound out there.

And to address the cellular basis of low energy which in my experience far outweighs any medical cause of fatigue.

Let me be more specific. Studies have shown that as we age something very disconcerting happens. Enzymes and hormones that enhance out performance energy, mental clarity and physical strength go down.

Hormones and enzymes that counteract these things either go up or stay the same leading to an imbalance in our ability to generate energy and burn fat efficiently.

In the past I have also told you about DHEA's mood elevating effects. You know if you've read my newsletter that there are DHEA receptors in the brain that help control mood and sex drive as well as ability to concentrate.

We call this effect of DHEA "neuro (meaning brain) endocrine".

At the level of the individual; cell I explained how DHEA has almost a thyroid hormone like effect that helps bring in the energy generating substrates to the cell.

Another interesting point about DHEA is that it has escaped the recent legislation designed to remove androstenedione and other androgenic compounds from the market.

Even Congress is convinced it's safe, and that is no mean feat.

To me the most interesting thing is that in spite of all the questions and bad press that DHEA has and will continue to be subjected to there is solid research to suggest that DHEA may actually prevent CANCER!!

Current research (see below) includes preventative effects in Breast and Prostate cancer as well as leukemia and bone marrow tumors!

There is also more and more data to support that DHEA may also have potent anti-inflammatory benefits.

If you've read any of my emails, you know the critical importance that inflammation causes in human diseases including aging.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an abundantly produced adrenal steroid whose biological role has never been clarified. DHEA is a potent uncompetitive inhibitor of mammalian glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and as a consequence lowers NADPH levels and reduces NADPH-dependent oxygen-free radical production. Overproduction of oxygen-free radicals, or oxidative stress, upregulates inflammation and cellular proliferation and is believed to play a critical role in the development of cancer, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease, as well as the basic aging process. Both in vitro and in vivo experimental studies strongly indicate that DHEA and related steroids inhibit inflammation and associated epithelial hyperplasia, carcinogenesis, and atherosclerosis, at least in part, through the inhibition of G6PDH and oxygen-free radical formation. Recent epidemiological findings in Sardinian males bearing the Mediterranean variant of G6PDH deficiency are consistent with the hypothesis that reduced G6PDH activity has a beneficial effect on age-related disease development and longevity. y

The above article substantiates DHEA's anti- inflammatory and longevity effects through the ability to reduce free radical generation.
